Kim Kardashian’s Closet Puts Fashion’s Environmental Crisis in the Spotlight
Kim Kardashian’s wardrobe has long been the stuff of fashion legend. And the sheer scale of her closet still manages to stun. Kardashian’s clothing is spread across meticulously organized rooms in her Hidden Hills home, and the collection ranges from archival designer pieces and custom couture to basics and accessories. A resurfaced clip from years ago has fans paying attention to just how many clothes the reality star owns. And it’s bringing up the broader conversation of the environmental impact of fast fashion.
Kim Kardashian’s massive closet was displayed in a resurfaced clip
Kim Kardashian is known for her incredible fashion sense, and she’s made great strides with her shapewear and loungewear brand, SKIMS. Fans of the reality star love seeing what she plans to wear in public, as she continues to stun in unusual designer pieces and accessories. More recently, a resurfaced clip shows Kardashian discussing her incredible closet that holds thousands of articles of clothing, many of which she never touches.
“I have thousands and thousands of clothes,” Kardashian says in the Reddit clip as the camera pans over a large warehouse space filled with her belongings. “I think I have, like, 30,000 pieces.”
Tracy Romulus, the chief marketing officer of KKW brands, was with Kardashian in the clip. “This is so fun to see your style evolution over the years,” Romulus comments while sifting through the hanging clothing. “Do you feel like you’ll ever sort of style-wise go back to the stuff you used to wear?”
Kardashian didn’t have an answer to the question. Instead, she noted that her “biggest insecurity” was figuring out what her next “muse relationship” would be like.
Reddit users commented on Kardashian’s vast wardrobe.
“Her closet alone is larger than many people’s houses,” one user wrote. “That’s really sickening IMO.”
“I thought that was a consignment store!” another user wrote.
“… Even if you changed three or four times in a day, you could never wear all that in a lifetime,” yet another user commented.
Kim Kardashian’s extensive closet and fast fashion have real effects on the environment
Fashion and fast fashion have profound, measurable impacts on the environment. And Kim Kardashian’s extensive closet, as seen in the resurfaced clip, is renewing the conversation.
The fashion industry uses a staggering amount of resources. According to a study from York University, the sector is responsible for an estimated 8–10% of global carbon emissions, a footprint comparable to that of international flights and maritime shipping combined. Textile production alone uses about 93 billion cubic meters of water annually. This contributes heavily to water scarcity in many regions, and textile dyeing and treatment processes account for nearly 20% of global wastewater, discharging toxic chemicals that degrade rivers and ecosystems.
Water use for individual garments is also significant. Producing a single cotton shirt can require around 2,700 liters of water, and a pair of jeans may need up to 10,000 liters, according to Rawshot.AI.
The industry’s waste problem is equally immense. Globally, around 92 million tons of textile waste are generated each year, according to a report from ZipDo. The vast majority ends up in landfills or is incinerated. These synthetic-heavy garments may take centuries to decompose, slowly releasing greenhouse gases like methane as they break down.
The reality star once commented on climate change
Kim Kardashian commented on climate change while speaking to Interview Magazine in 2022.
“I believe in climate change, and I believe that anything can help,” she said. “But I also believe in being realistic, and I think sometimes, there’s so much to worry about on this planet, and it can be really scary to live your life with anxiety. I have super climate change-involved friends, and I love learning from them. I do what I can, but you have to pick and choose what really works for you in your life.”
Kardashian added that “no one’s going to be 100% perfect” when it comes to the environment.
Many fans disliked this answer from the reality star due to her private jet usage.
