King Charles’ Unexpected Dessert Snub Exposed by Former Royal Chef
King Charles is reportedly extremely particular about the food that he chooses to satiate his taste buds. The monarch has been revealed to be very particular about having his food based on the season. However, it has been divulged that the King is not a huge fan of chocolate, which remains one of the most adored desserts across the globe.
A palace insider has revealed to Radar Online that Charles is extremely careful about how the food that comes to his table is produced and whether it is in its right season.
The source said, “The King has always been very particular about what he eats. He genuinely cares about where food comes from, how it is produced and whether it is in season. It is not simply about having expensive ingredients on the table.”
The insider pointed out an example of how the former Prince of Wales dislikes having strawberries in January since that is off-season for the popular fruit.
The source said, “Strawberries in January would have been completely out of the question. He has a real appreciation for seasonal British produce and believes food tastes better when it is eaten at the right time of year.”
However, the insider soon revealed that King Charles does not share a strong liking for chocolate and would opt for cheese instead.
The insider said, “But chocolate is his big no-no. He has much more enthusiasm for a good cheese board when it comes to dessert, particularly when there is quality honey to accompany it. He is not someone who needs elaborate meals every evening. He enjoys simple, beautifully prepared food, and Italian dishes have always been particularly popular with him.”
The source also revealed to the publication that the monarch’s choice of food differs from place to place where the Royal Family spends their time. The insider pointed out that while Balmoral is rich in wonderful fruits from the garden, the Christmas dishes in Sandringham are homely and heartier.
The monarch is also particular about the ingredients that go into his food due to being passionate about gardening.
The palace insider revealed, “Charles has a genuine interest in gardening and growing produce, so knowing where ingredients come from matters enormously to him. There is a connection between what is grown on the estate and what eventually appears on the plate.”
The kitchen is reportedly made aware of a dish not to be served to the King in case it is off-season or not to his taste.
In an April 2026 interview with InStyle, former Royal chef Darren McGrady revealed how the monarch is a seasonal eater and is fiercely particular about the ingredients that go into his food.
McGrady also echoed King Charles’ distaste for chocolate. The former Royal chef had said, “King Charles is not a big fan of chocolate, so that wouldn’t be on the menu.” The monarch’s afternoon tea reportedly also includes boiled eggs, while the Royal family’s picnics consist of plum pudding and a big sandwich.
