Several members of the British royal family gathered for Peter Phillips‘ wedding to Harriet Sperling on June 6.

The headlines from the day included which designer the bride chose for her dress, what the other royals wore for the ceremony, and the Princess of Wales’ (formerly known as Kate Middleton) “awkward run-in” with her ex-boyfriend Rupert Finch, who also attended the royal affair.

Kate was seeing Rupert back in college before she started dating Prince William. Finch was in his final year of studying law at the school when they got together, but they ended things less than a year later. Today, he is a solicitor in London and married to the Marquess of Reading’s daughter, Lady Natasha Rufus Isaacs, who also attended St. Andrews with Middleton.

Now, someone who used to work for the royals is revealing what we didn’t know about Rupert’s attendance, while an expert has decoded what the princess’s body language during the wedding conveyed.

Kate knew her ex was invited to the wedding beforehand

Grant Harrold was King Charles’ personal butler for seven years. During his time working for the now-monarch, Harrold’s duties also included those of valet, housekeeper, house manager, and driver. He also looked after Prince Harry, Prince William, and Kate whenever they stayed at Highgrove House. Since leaving the royal household, he’s become one of the U.K.’s leading etiquette experts, a best-selling author, and a commentator.

Speaking on behalf of CasinoHawks, Harrold told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “Members of the royal family are known for remaining close with their exes. The king and Prince William both still count some of their exes as good friends. Dating as a royal involves so much trust, and that rarely just ends when they break up. Also, they tend to date within their friendship group – again, for trust reasons — so again that friendship doesn’t stop.

“Etiquette-wise, it would have been brought up with Kate. She would have known in advance. It wouldn’t have been a surprise. I really don’t think she would have had any issue with it, and even if she did, she wouldn’t have said anything as she wouldn’t want to make things awkward or complicated for Peter. It just shows you how gracious Kate is.”

Kate appeared ‘happy’ and ‘relaxed’ during the event

And despite all the talk about the Princess of Wales’ “awkward run-in” with Finch, an expert noted that there was no evidence of that in her body language.

Speaking on behalf of Betfair Casino, Stanton told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “[Kate] always appears genuinely happy, with relaxed shoulders and upright posture. There are no signs of anything other than confidence and self-assurance … She’s displaying a genuine smile of happiness and joy. The crow’s feet around the eyes suggest genuine engagement and emotion. There’s no indication of anything other than someone who is happy, confident, and content.”

Showbiz Cheat Sheet acknowledges that conditions and cultures can impact body language and is sensitive to all backgrounds.
