Luke Bracey Plays Charles Ingalls in Netflix’s ‘Little House on the Prairie’ — Where Else Have You Seen the Australian Actor?
Luke Bracey is a Charles Ingalls for the 21st century.
The Australian actor plays the pioneering father of Laura Ingalls in Netflix’s new version of Little House on the Prairie. He has big shoes to fill, stepping into a role embodied by the late Michael Landon in the beloved 1970s TV series of the same name. But this is a modern interpretation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s semi-autobiographical tale of growing up on the American frontier, and Bracey delivers a different kind of take on Laura’s Pa.

“We were looking for someone who wasn’t only strapping and handsome and had that heart people expect from Michael Landon, but who also had a fresh perspective on what it meant to be a man in history,” executive producer Joy Gorman Wettels told Netflix’s Tudum. “Luke brought that.”
Bracey brought life to the character of a man fighting to make a better life for his family despite having never read the Little House books or watched the original TV show. He said he was drawn to Charles’ optimism while also realizing that his relentlessly positive attitude could at times be a short-coming.
“Someone’s strengths often can be their weaknesses. He can look at life sometimes with rose-colored glasses, and I think he has a certain naivete to him because of his extreme optimism,” the actor told Tudum. “The man who always wants to see the best in the world and in people is obviously going to be up against some issues there — I found that a really interesting part of Pa.”

Pa is also a different kind of character than Bracey has played in the pats. Australian TV fans will likely remember him from the soap Home and Away, on which he appeared 2009 to 2010. Others might recognize him from season 2 of Hulu’s The Artful Dodger, where he played the serious but sensitive Inspector Henry Boxer. He also starred in the 2015 remake of Point Break as Johnny Utah, the character portrayed by Keanu Reeves in the original 1991 movie. In 2020, he played Emma Stone’s love interest in the Netflix rom-com Holidate.
Last year, Bracey starred in The Travellers, where he played a man who returns to his small Australian hometown to say goodbye to his dying mother. And in 2023, he played a father who must race to save his kidnapped daughter in the thriller Mercy Road. He’s also appeared in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, The November Man, Hacksaw Ridge, and Elvis.
