Malcolm-Jamal Warner Shows: Where to Watch ‘The Cosby Show,’ ‘The Resident,’ and More
Malcolm-Jamal Warner has died at age 54. The actor was on a vacation in Costa Rica when he accidentally drowned while swimming, a source told People. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
Warner was best known for playing Theo Huxtable on the hit sitcom The Cosby Show from 1984 to 1992. He received an Emmy nomination in 1986 for playing the only son of Cliff and Clair Huxtable. After that show ended, he went on to appear in numerous other shows and movies, including Malcolm & Eddie, The Resident, Reed Between the Lines, Sneaky Pete, Ten Days in the Valley, Major Crimes, Fool’s Gold, and Community. Here’s where to watch Warner in some of his most memorable roles.
‘The Cosby Show’
Warner rose to fame playing Theo on The Cosby Show, one of the most iconic shows in TV history. Unfortunately, the groundbreaking sitcom’s legacy has been tarnished since dozens of women accused star and creator Bill Cosby of rape and sexual assault. The show no longer airs in reruns and is not available on major streaming platforms. However, episodes are available for purchase on Prime Video.
Despite Cosby’s downfall, Warner told People in 2023 that he still took pride in the show.
“Regardless of how some people may feel about the show now, I’m still proud of the legacy and having been a part of such an iconic show that had such a profound impact on — first and foremost, Black culture — but also American culture,” he said.
‘Malcolm & Eddie’
Warner starred opposite Eddie Griffin in this Odd Couple-esque sitcom that aired from 1996 to 2000 on UPN. Griffin was a laid-back tow truck driver, while Jamal-Warner played his responsible and ambitious roommate.
“My Heart is heavy today…,” Griffin wrote on Instagram after Warner’s death. “For what the world lost was a Father a Son a Poet a Musician a Actor a Teacher a Writer a Director a Friend a Warrior that I had the pleasure of going to war with against the Hollywood machine and sometimes with each other because that’s what Brothers do but the Love was and is always there. You’ve taught me so much and I thank you.”
Two seasons of Malcolm & Eddie are streaming for free on Pluto TV.
‘Jeremiah’
While he was well-known for his comedic roles, Warner flexed his dramatic chops in Jeremiah, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi series that aired on Showtime from 2002 to 2004. Beverly Hills, 90210 alum Luke Perry played the titular Jeremiah, a drifter on the hunt for survivors after a virus wipes out most of the population. Jamal-Warner played Kurdy, another loner who teams up with Jeremiah.
All episodes of Jeremiah are streaming on The Roku Channel.
‘Reed Between the Lines’
Warner teamed up with Tracee Ellis-Ross for this BET sitcom that premiered in 2011. She played a psychologist struggling to balance her career with her role as a mom to twins and wife to Jamal-Warner’s NYU English professor.
Ellis Ross paid tribute to her former co-star in an Instagram post after his death.
“I love you, Malcolm. First I met you as Theo with the rest of the world then you were my first TV husband. My heart is so so sad,” she wrote. “What an actor and friend you were: warm, gentle, present, kind, thoughtful, deep, funny, elegant. You made the world a brighter place. Sending so much love to your family. I’m so sorry for this unimaginable loss.”
Reed Between the Lines is available for purchase on Prime Video.
‘The Resident’
From 2018 to 2023, Jamal-Warner was a regular on the Fox medical drama The Resident, where he played a surgeon at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital.
The Resident is streaming on Netflix and Hulu.
‘Alert: Missing Persons Unit’
Warner’s most recent screen appearance was in Alert: Missing Persons Unit. He played Chief Inspector Bill Houston in season 3 of the Fox drama.
Alert: Missing Persons Unit is streaming on Hulu.
