Mariah Carey Said It’s ‘Best’ if She Doesn’t Talk About Nick Cannon When Asked About Co-Parenting
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon’s love story reads like the kind of romance film people rewind to. After a star-studded wedding in the Bahamas in 2008, they welcomed twins, Monroe and Moroccan, in 2011. But despite high-profile moments, their marriage ended in a separation in 2014 and divorce finalized in 2016. Recently, Carey was asked about her current experience co-parenting her kids with Nick. Here’s what she said about not wanting to discuss her ex on the air.
Mariah Carey said she believes it’s ‘best’ not to discuss co-parenting with Nick Cannon while on the air
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon’s 14-year-old twins, Monroe and Moroccan Cannon, continue to thrive under the care of their parents, who, despite their 2016 divorce, maintain a supportive co-parenting relationship. Previously, Carey expressed in a Harper’s Bazaar interview that both she and Cannon are committed to fairness and creating positive experiences for their children.
“How do I say this? They spend time with him, and they have a good time; they spend time with me, and they have a good time,” she told the publication. “I want to make sure I’m always fair about the situation because it’s tough to grow up with divorced parents.”
In a recent interview with CBS Mornings, Carey, 56, tactfully avoided discussing her co-parenting dynamic with Nick, 44. Gayle King asked Carey how she “navigates co-parenting” with Nick’s life “so public.” Carey chose to swerve around the topic and focus on discussing other aspects of her life and career.
“I kind of feel like it’s best if I don’t talk about him,” Carey said, “because he can just be in his own world. No offense to him.”
Nick Cannon explained how he came to have 12 children
Nick Cannon spoke on The Breakfast Club in September 2025 about having 12 kids. He discussed how having so many children was likely the result of a trauma response.
“It wasn’t like I was acting out, it was more of being careless, being frivolous with my process because I could do it, because I had the money, because I had the access to whoever and however I wanted to move,” he said. “… And then, obviously, life happens as well. It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, I’m going to go have 12 kids.’ It was more about, ‘I’m just going to live life, and have fun, and whatever happens, happens. I can handle it.'”
“Being almost 45 now, I sit back and I’m like, ‘Yeah, if I would’ve thought the process through a little bit more, and took time to actually do the inner work, things might’ve been a little different in certain scenarios,'” Nick continued.
Nick noted that if he’d done “the work and the healing” following his 2016 divorce from Mariah Carey, then he might not have had 12 children.
“I probably would have took my time in a lot other scenarios,” he continued. “And for whatever reason, I thought that was the answer a lot of times. Like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna figure it out over here.'”
The exes reportedly ‘talked daily’ in 2023
Nick Cannon spoke on an episode of The Jason Lee Show about his post-divorce relationship with Mariah Carey. According to Page Six, Nick said Carey is a huge supporter of his massive family.
“She’s high frequency. She always asks me, ‘You aight? How you doin’? You handling it all?'” Nick said.
Nick noted that Carey also requests that he doesn’t bring “none of that bulls***” home with him.
“When we talk daily, she’s just checking in on my spirit,” Nick explained.
