Mary Cosby’s son pulled at the heartstrings of Bravo viewers when The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star desperately tried to reach her once “perfect child” while filming a scene for the reality show. Robert Cosby Jr., now in his early twenties, has experienced substance abuse issues and legal troubles. Now, he’s facing another arrest — this time for assault and trespassing.

Mary Cosby’s son is in hot water with the law again

On September 6, police arrested Robert Cosby Jr. after responding to a domestic violence call outside of Salt Lake City, according to TMZ. The young adult reportedly tried to enter his father-in-law’s house via a dog door. He also assaulted someone in front of the home. When the responding police officer ordered Robert Jr. to the ground, he refused to do so before eventually complying.

Mary Cosby’s son is being charged with assault, criminal trespass, resisting law enforcement/failing to comply, and violations of court orders. The court set his bond between $5,000-$10,000, according to various news outlets. This recent arrest raises fresh concerns about Robert Jr.’s stability as his mom continues to support her only child.

Mary spoke about Robert Jr.’s sobriety journey just a few days after his arrest. The church leader appeared on SiriusXM’s Reality Checked radio show with Dorinda Medley. She told the RHONY alum that Robert Jr. is “doing as good as he can” following his decision to become sober. Mary explained that she can’t make him be sober. “I can just only push him, encourage him, and love him,” she stated. “And that’s what I’m doing. That’s kind of where we are. … He’s still on that road, and it’s a hardcore road. It’s tough to watch as a mom.”

Robert Cosby Jr.’s previous arrest record

In March 2022, police arrested Robert Jr. for DUI and for lacking a driver’s license. Other charges were also filed but dropped as part of a plea deal, which involved completing substance abuse education. Many reports indicate that he did not finish the program at the time. However, Mary confirmed that Robert Jr. completed a month-long inpatient rehab stay in California in late 2024. “He did an excellent job. He came out a new person,” she told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live in December 2024.

This rehab stay came after Mary had a candid, emotional conversation with Robert Jr. on RHOSLC season 5. She detailed their talk about his addiction, saying, “He opened up to me and he told me things that I didn’t know. He just told me, point blank, he said, ‘Mom, I did drugs.’ … He said, ‘Heroin.'” Robert Jr. continued to reveal his experiences with suicidal ideation and the use of additional drugs like Xanax, acid, molly, cocaine, and OxyContin.

Some Bravo viewers have criticized Mary and her husband, Robert Cosby Sr., regarding whether Mary’s spoiling of their son contributed to his situation. She did admit that she “sheltered” him while raising him at home rather than sending him to college. In a RHOSLC confessional, Mary explained, “Just as a parent, you can feel like you failed, and there’s nothing that nobody can do. … But it’s my responsibility to make sure if he comes to me and if he says he wants help, it’s my responsibility to make sure he gets it. And whatever I have to do to do it, I’m gonna do it.”
