Matt Healy’s Mom Says She’s ‘Glad’ Taylor Swift Isn’t Her Daughter-in-Law
Taylor Swift and Matt Healy have both moved on from their short-lived romance, but Healy’s mom, Denise Welch, still has some feelings about it. Welch, well known for her work on Coronation Street, recently appeared for an interview and was more than happy to take a dig at Taylor Swift before attempting to walk back the comment. Fans are flummoxed by the obvious show of ill will years after the pair ended their “casual” romance.

Matt Healy’s mom has no problem defending her son, even if that means throwing shade at Taylor Swift. Denise Welch, a British soap star, appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen this week, and she had some not-so-nice things to say about Taylor Swift, who briefly dated her son.
When asked about Swift’s latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, Welch took a swipe at the songstress. She opted not to discuss the merits of the album and instead said, “Being her mother-in-law is a role that I am glad that I lost.” Welch tried to recover, claiming she had nothing against the pop artist but went on to suggest she (and perhaps Healy) resent that some songs appear to be about the brief relationship when he can’t say “anything.” She called the situation “tricky.”
The comments struck some Swift fans as particularly odd. While Healy and Swift had a flirtation years before hooking up, their actual courtship was so brief that talk of possibly becoming in-laws feels like a bit of a stretch. While the relationship was short, fans believe several songs on the album point to Healy. He seems ok with taking swipes, too. He is believed to have taken a dig at Swift by referring to himself as “the best songwriter of my generation” during a June performance.

Matt Healy and Taylor Swift didn’t date for long, but they sure did manage to pack a lot of speculation into a very short love affair. The pair were first linked back in 2014, when they were still in their early 20s. Swift was spotted at a 1975 concert; he wore her merch. The pair seemed to briefly enjoy teasing the media, but later claimed there was never any romance. They were spotted together here and there over the next few years, but Healy always maintained he wasn’t interested in anything more than a flirtation. According to NME, he even suggested being Taylor Swift’s boyfriend would be “emasculating.”
Despite his comments, they eventually reconnected. Healy and Swift reportedly rekindled things just after she split from Joe Alwyn. In May 2023, reports surfaced that The 1975 frontman and “Midnights” singer were dating. Swift and Alwyn broke up in April 2023. In mid-May, Healy lent credence to that theory by appearing at multiple Eras Tour dates and spending time with Swift’s family. He was spotted leaving her apartment on several occasions throughout the month.
By June, the relationship was officially over. They never publicly addressed the brief romance. However, he and his mom are certainly addressing it now.

Healy is currently engaged to Gabrielle Betchel, the woman his mother mentioned during her candid and awkward interview. Betchel, who goes by Gabriette professionally, and Healy were first linked in September 2023. They announced their engagement less than a year later, but they have yet to tie the knot.
Swift has moved on, too. She was first spotted with Travis Kelce in September 2023, but began dating the NFL tight end over the summer. They might have linked up just weeks after ending her casual situationship with Healy. The duo has not announced an engagement. Still, fans believe they are headed in that direction. Kelce has been open about his adoration for his girlfriend of nearly two years.
