Meghan Markle and Prince Harry recently attended one of Beyoncé’s shows near Los Angeles and the Duchess of Sussex wanted everyone to know about it so she posted photos and videos of the concert on her Instagram account.

The Suits alum shared a carousel of pics and clips from her dancing to Beyoncé singing to Harry showing his wife some PDA.

Now, someone who used to work for the royal family believes the Sussexes and the monarchy are both trying to send a very different message to each other.

The message Meghan was sending with her PDA photos during the Beyoncé concert

Grant Harrold was King Charles’ butler for seven years. During his time working for the now-monarch, his duties included that of valet, housekeeper, house manager, and driver. Harrold also looked after Prince William and Prince Harry whenever they stayed at Highgrove House.

Speaking on behalf of Slingo, Harrold shared with Showbiz Cheat Sheet: “This is the fine line. One minute they want to be royal, and then they want to be celeb. This is definitely crossing the line into celebrity territory. What they’re doing here is what celebrities do. They’re becoming celebrity royals.

“One of the biggest no-nos for the royal family is PDAs. They just don’t do it. There is the odd hand holding, or maybe once in a blue moon maybe a peck on the cheek. But we don’t see full-on public displays of affection. It has changed a bit, and the family has become a bit more affectionate. We’ve seen Kate and Wills share a brief kiss, but you never would in a million years have had Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip doing something like this in public, it never would have happened.”

Harrold added: “I’ve got no issues with them doing it. If you’re in love with someone and you want to show the world, you’re going to stand in the best place to do that. People want to show that. But for the royals, it’s not the done thing unless you want to make a statement, and that’s definitely what they’re doing. It’s them saying, ‘Look how happy we are, look how in love we are.’”

The message King Charles recently sent to Meghan and Harry

Harrold also opined that just days earlier, the royals were sending Meghan and Harry a message as well with who had a place on the balcony during the VE celebrations following the duke’s interview claims and talk of a reconciliation.

According to the former royal butler, “It’s very positive to see the Prince and Princess of Wales, their children, Princess Anne with her husband, and Edward and Sophie on the balcony with the king and queen. This is what I imagine is the future of balcony appearances. You used to get a lot of extras on the balcony, but this shows how much it’s changed — and it’s changed a lot.

“It’s a smaller royal family. This is a clear message to Prince Harry — this is the royal family, this is it now. What we saw on the balcony is the future of the monarchy. It’s a very important signal to them, but also to the country and to the world.”
