There have been allegations for years that Meghan Markle mistreated her staff when she was still a working member of the royal family. It’s been claimed that those who worked in the royal household found it so hard to deal with Meghan that they dubbed her “Duchess Difficult.”

The accusations about what it’s like working for Prince Harry’s wife followed her when she moved to America. She had an unusually high staff turnover, and soon many of her past employees began to speak out about their experiences.

In 2024, The Hollywood Reporter ran a story after speaking to members of the so-called “Sussex Survivors Club.” They called the duchess a “dictator in high heels” and labeled her a “demon boss” who has “psycho moments.” Then in 2025, Vanity Fair published a lengthy feature about the Sussexes’ lives in Montecito. The publication talked to several people who said they “needed therapy” after working with Meghan because of her brutal treatment towards people, saying she’s “really, like, a Mean Girls teenager.”

Now, it’s being claimed that some people who didn’t even work for Meghan at the Palace were treated horribly by her.

“When Meghan was previously living in the U.K., the way she interviewed [prospective] household staff was extremely rude,” one source told Page Six. “Applicants would come in to interview for housekeeping or maid positions and were basically forbidden from speaking to her.

“They would hand over their résumé, then be told to stand off to the side of the room, not speak and not make eye contact while Meghan sat there and reviewed it. She wouldn’t ask them questions or have any kind of actual conversation with them. She would take her time reading through the résumé, look the person up and down, and then simply tell them they could leave.”

The source went on to say that the way she acted became common knowledge among household staffing circles, sharing, “This happened with enough people that word absolutely got around among household staff. People remember how they were treated, and there are a lot of people who simply would not want to put themselves in that position and work for her now.”

Another source brought up similar complaints, saying, “There was definitely concern among household staff about Harry and Meghan coming back to the U.K. Word has gotten around over the years about what Meghan can be like to work for, and she has a reputation for being very dismissive and rude to staff.”

That insider added that former Suits star‘s reputation has left a bad impression for future hiring prospects, explaining, “A lot of people in those circles talk, so stories travel. And there are definitely people who would have no interest in working for her because of what they’ve heard.”

After the initial allegations came to light, the Palace opened an investigation into the claims that Meghan bullied royal employees. The findings of that investigation have never been made public, and the Sussexes have always denied the accusations that the duchess mistreated her staff.
