Melissa Gilbert Says She Needs to ‘Slow Down’ and ‘Rest’ as Husband Timothy Busfield Faces Abuse Charges
Melissa Gilbert is speaking out after her husband, Timothy Busfield, was charged with child abuse.
Melissa Gilbert wants to ‘prioritize what truly matters’
On Monday, the Little House on the Prairie star shared a statement on the Modern Prairie Instagram account where she thanked fans for their support. Recently, Gilbert’s personal social media went dark as Busfield has faced accusations that he abused children on the set of Fox’s The Cleaning Lady, where he was both an actor and a director.
“I’m sending you all my love and gratitude during this extraordinarily difficult time. Not only for Tim, me and our family, but in the collective heaviness so many of us seem to be carrying right now. Add an unexpected storm to the mix, and it can all feel like a bit too much,” Gilbert, who married Busfield in 2013, wrote.
The former child star went on to share that her husband’s legal problems had prompted her to reassess her priorities.
“This season has reminded me, very clearly, how important it is to slow down, prioritize what truly matters, and allow ourselves moments of rest,” she wrote. “Stepping back from the noise, the news, and even our daily responsibilities from time to time gives us space to recharge, reflect, and find our center again.”
Gilbert added that she was grateful for the “extraordinary community of women here at Modern Prairie” who were making her “feel safer, more grounded, and deeply held.
“I’ll be easing back into things thoughtfully and with care – moving forward one step at a time,” she added. “More to come, and so much gratitude always.”
Husband of ‘Little House on the Prairie’ star charged with child abuse
On January 9, Busfield was charged with two counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor and child abuse in New Mexico. After spending several days in jail, he has been released on his own recognizance pending trial.
Many commenters on the Modern Prairie post offered words of support and encouragement to Gilbert. But others noted that she seemed to be downplaying or ignoring the seriousness of the accusations against Busfield.
“Time doesn’t erase the actions of someone … Imagine what these victims have had to live with. While Tim lives his happy day to day life,” one person wrote.
“I’m sorry this happened and I truly hope this was all just a big mistake,” another commented. “However, If it isn’t a mistake, if the last accusation wasn’t a mistake, and you support him and lend credibility to his position then you are culpable too.”
