Melissa Gilbert Won’t Appear in ‘When Calls the Heart’ Season 14 Because of ‘Budget Issues’
Melissa Gilbert is saying goodbye to Hope Valley.
The actor will not appear in When Calls the Heart Season 14, she revealed in a recent Instagram post.
“Many people have asked if I will be returning to When Calls the Heart this coming season,” she wrote in the July 16 update. “The answer to that is no I will not. I am told this is due to ‘budget issues.’ That said, I wish all my friends in Hope Valley a wonderful and successful season 14.”

The Little House on the Prairie alum appeared as a guest star in season 12 and 13 of the Hallmark Channel series. She played Georgie McGill a forensic investigator who strikes up a romance with Bill Avery (Jack Wagner).
“I will be eternally grateful to my dear friend [Michael Landon Jr.] for giving me the chance to bring Georgie McGill to life,” Gilbert wrote in the caption, referring to the When Calls the Heart co-creator, writer, and executive producer. Landon Jr. is the son of the late Michael Landon, who played Charles “Pa” Ingalls on Little House.
“It was a lovely couple of seasons but it’s time to say farewell,” Gilbert added. “When one door closes, another one opens. Looking forward to whatever comes next.
In her post, Gilbert noted that budget cuts were the reason her character wasn’t included in the upcoming episodes, which will air in 2027. But her followers suspected that Hallmark was putting some distance between itself and Gilbert due to her husband, actor Timothy Busfield. Earlier this year, authorities in New Mexico indicted Busfield on four counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor. He pleaded not guilty and denied all the charges against him, which stem from alleged incidents on the set of the Fox drama The Cleaning Lady.
“I don’t believe for one second that it’s ‘budget issues’; more likely the holier-than-thou Hallmark Channel trying to protect their precious image,” one person commented.
“Budget issues is code for ‘we don’t want to support you during a very difficult period in your family’s life,’” another person argued.
However, several people pointed out that the decision to part ways with Gilbert might be related to the news that former cast member Lori Loughlin would be returning to the show next season after a long absence. Loughlin herself was fired by Hallmark in 2019 due to her involvement in the college admissions scandal.
Melissa Gilbert has defended Timothy Busfield
In the wake of Busfield’s indictment, Gilbert has publicly defended her husband.
“Our life as we knew it is done. We are grieving what we had. All of our plans, all of our dreams, all of our ideas, all of our projects,” she told Good Morning America in an April 2026 interview. “For Tim, it’s done. He’s canceled … even if he’s exonerated, he will always be that guy. The last person in the world who would hurt a child.”
“And believe me, if I thought for a second that Tim Busfield hurt a child, he’d have a lot more to worry about than prison,” she added.
One commenter on Instagram speculated that it was Gilbert’s vocal support of Busfield that was causing issues for the network.
“[M]ight have something to do with her attitude about it all as well,” they wrote. “I’ve watched the show from the beginning. This is the right decision for both parties as she seemed to be standing with her husband.”
