Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift ‘Killed’ This Engagement Ring Trend, Expert Says
In 2025, celebrity engagement rings are having a bold moment. And bigger, statement‑making sparklers are very much back in style. Stars are embracing chunky bands, gold-forward designs, and diamonds cut in non‑traditional shapes that catch the light with flair. Many rings opt for cushion or oval cuts, dramatic east‑west settings that lay the stone horizontally, and thick 14k or 18k yellow‑gold bands that feel both luxurious and modern. Diamond expert Nishit Mehta, founder of La Joya Jewelry, gave insight into 2026’s top engagement ring trends. Here’s what Mehta shared.
Diamond expert Nishit Mehta says Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift have ‘literally killed’ the trend of thin engagement rings
In 2025, two of pop music’s biggest icons, Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift, have captured headlines not just for their love lives, but for the rings now dazzling on their fingers. Cyrus stunned at the premiere of Avatar: Fire and Ash, debuting a chunky, east‑west set cushion‑cut diamond on a thick 14‑karat yellow‑gold band. Meanwhile, Swift stepped into a new chapter with a vintage‑inspired old mine brilliant‑cut diamond ring.
Nishit Mehta, founder of La Joya Jewelry, one of the fastest-growing ethical fine jewelry brands redefining the diamond industry, explained in a statement to Showbiz Cheat Sheet how Cyrus and Swift have “literally killed the thin engagement ring trend.”
“Miley Cyrus’s engagement ring showcased a huge east-west bezel set cushion cut diamond in chunky yellow gold,” Mehta wrote to Showbiz. “With its attention-grabbing east-west setting, this ring personified ‘modern design,’ and with its bold bezel look, it defined ‘security.'”
“On the other hand, Taylor Swift’s old mine-cut engagement ring oozed vintage romantic love,” Mehta continued. “By choosing indie designer Kindred Lubeck over well-entrenched luxury engagement ring brands, Taylor signaled a return to soulful, handmade craftsmanship.”
Mehta noted that he sees the effects of these engagement rings in his customers’ choices. “Women no longer want a ring that floats, but in fact, they want a ring that feels like furniture for the hand,” he continued.
“Likewise, we are seeing a huge uptick in demand for elongated diamonds like Taylor Swift’s engagement ring. Ovals, emerald cuts, and elongated cushions are back in vogue and hugely sought for.”
Nishit Mehta thinks ‘statement’ rings will trend in 2026
According to Nishit Mehta, engagement ring-buyers in 2026 will want to make a “statement” with their jewelry.
“We think that the trend for 2026 will be to make a statement, yet in a simple way,” Mehta wrote to Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “We’re getting rid of halos and pavé decorations and allowing the ring’s architecture to speak for itself. This is because people have lost faith in the power of little, complex features to draw attention. Instead, they now rely on the sheer impact of a huge, high-quality solitaire, and a lot of heavy gold to do
the job.”
Mehta noted that more buyers want Bezel settings for their rings. Additionally, they’re looking for elongated cushion cuts, oval-shaped diamonds, and emerald cut diamonds. And yellow-gold bands are heavily trending.
Celebrities continue to ‘rebrand’ lab-grown diamonds
According to expert Nishit Mehta, celebrity endorsements have “rebranded” lab-grown diamonds.
“A few years ago, lab-grown diamonds were seen as a way to save money and considered cheap ‘cousins’ of natural diamonds,” he wrote. “However, today, they are a sign of intelligence, ethics, and actually define today’s ‘smart consumer.'”
“When A-listers like Penélope Cruz build their own lab-grown diamond jewelry line, or Leonardo DiCaprio puts money into this technology, it sends a very strong message,” he continued. “It’s not about how much you paid or how big your diamond is anymore. It’s really about your morals and what you believe in.”
Mehta noted that he’s seeing this in customers who want “Zendaya’s look” and “DiCaprio’s ethics.” And they can only acquire both with lab-grown diamonds.
