Wimbledon is more than one of the biggest tennis tournaments of the year. It’s also widely considered one of the most significant fashion events of the summer, where spectators showcase major style statements. While there is no strict official dress code for attendees, the Royal Box and the general stands are packed with high-profile attendees showing off their style. Now, an expert is looking back on some of the best outfits we’ve seen celebrities and royals sport at the event.

Nick Ede is a UK-based brand and culture expert and public relations specialist with over 20 years of experience in fashion and entertainment. He is a regular commentator on television and in the press. Alongside his media work, he was also once close friends with Meghan Markle.

Speaking on behalf of Cafe Casino, Ede told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, “Wimbledon is one of the few British sporting events where fashion is almost as important as the tennis itself. The key is striking the perfect balance between polished and practical. Think elegant yet functional, as you’ll be doing a lot of walking
throughout the day.

“You want to look effortlessly chic while also being prepared for four seasons in one afternoon. Wimbledon style is rooted in timeless British dressing, so classic tailoring, beautiful dresses, and smart separates will always work better than chasing fast-moving trends.”

According to Ede, some of the most memorable fashion moments include, “The Princess of Wales’ appearances have become some of Wimbledon’s defining fashion moments. Her polka-dot Alessandra Rich dress, mint-green Balmain blazer, and beautiful sunshine-yellow dresses have all become iconic.

“Beyond the royal family, David Beckham consistently delivers a masterclass in modern tailoring, while Sienna Miller perfectly captures effortless British summer style. Stars such as Oliver Cheshire, Pixie Lott, and Cynthia Erivo have all delivered standout Wimbledon looks, while Stanley Tucci and Luke Evans always look
effortlessly stylish. Wimbledon’s fashion history is also filled with memorable moments from Princess
Diana
, whose relaxed yet polished courtside style continues to inspire designers and fashion lovers today.”

As mentioned, Wimbledon does not have an official dress code, but there are still a few fashion do’s and don’ts those attending the event should take into account.

“Wimbledon style is polished rather than flashy, so smart tailoring, elegant dresses, and refined separates are always reliable choices … Natural materials such as linen and cotton not only look elegant but also help keep you comfortable throughout the day. I would always recommend bringing a blazer, a lightweight jacket, or a smart knit because the weather can shift dramatically over the course of the tournament,” Ede advised. “Footwear deserves careful thought too. Comfortable loafers, flats, wedges, or smart trainers will serve you far better than shoes that become painful after an hour.

“What should be avoided? Sportswear, beachwear, and extremely high heels rarely work for the occasion. Stiletto heels can quickly become impractical on grass, while over-accessorizing can detract from an otherwise sophisticated look. And whatever the forecast says, never forget an umbrella. Wimbledon and unpredictable British weather have always gone hand in hand.”
