MTV Just Canceled This Iconic Reality Show
It’s the end of an era at MTV. The network has canceled Catfish: The TV Show after nine seasons, Variety reports.
Catfish grew out of the 2010 documentary of the same name, which explored people who’d gotten caught up in deceptive online relationships. The movie and show introduced the now widely used term “catfish” to describes people who fake or stolen photos to misrepresent their identities on the internet.
Catfish: The TV Show premiered in 2012. New episodes last aired in July 2024.
Nev Schulman reacts to ‘Catfish’ cancellation news
Catfish host Nev Schulman broke the cancellation news to his fans in a video shared on Instagram.
“So yeah, after 12 years, almost 300 episodes, and just a lot of traveling around this incredible country … Catfish has officially been canceled,” Schulman said.
“Catfish as we’ve known it is over. Which is sad. But at the same time, what an incredible journey it’s been … I want to send a huge thank you to our crew,” he continued. “The dedication, the patience, the commitment to making sure that everything was exactly what it needed to be … the crew of this show is not just an incredible crew. They’re our family. They’re some of my best friends. I love you guys.”
Schulman and former co-host Max Joseph also thanked Catfish fans for their support.
“You guys have been awesome and you’ve made the show worth continuing to do. Even though I left, you still come up to me and you tell me how much you love watching it,” Joseph, who quit the show in 2018, said.
“Thank you for being a part of this,” Schulman added. “For turning what was an idea and a documentary into a global conversation … and hopefully setting a higher standard for how we should treat people. And treat ourselves.”
Did ‘Catfish’ team snub co-host Kamie Crawford?
While Schulman and Joseph made a point to thank the Catfish crew, multiple fans noticed that they neglected to acknowledge co-presenter Kamie Crawford.
“They didn’t even thank Kami???” one person wrote.
“I absolutely love the show but @kamiecrawford was one of the best additions to the show so how we just going to not thank her????” another asked.
Hours later, Schulman did give Crawford a shout-out in the in the comments of the Instagram post.
“And a HUGE thank you to Kamie too of course!” he wrote. But some fans felt that wasn’t enough to make up for the snub.
“Only 11 hours later??? @kamiecrawford was amazing and part of the reason, in my opinion, that the show did continue on for as long as it did,” one person commented.
“It was a purposeful dig I’m pretty sure,” another wrote.
Could ‘Catfish’ resurface on another network or streamer?
While Catfish’s run at MTV is over, the network is allowing producers to shop the series, so it could pop up again on another network or streamer. (Paging Netflix!)
“Maybe it’s just on pause?” Joseph said in the video.
MTV will continue to re-air old episodes. All nine seasons of Catfish are also streaming on Hulu,.
