The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards brought pop icons Taylor Swift and Madonna together. Besides bringing them under one roof, fans also got to witness a brief exchange between the two. However, as the two ladies spoke to each other off-mic, viewers could not catch up with their conversation. A lip reader recently revealed what the exchange was about and what Madonna told the 36-year-old, which also included a five-word question.

Swift and Madonna, both dressed in black, were caught speaking to each other during a break in the live broadcast. A clip of the two chatting went viral on social media, with their fans gushing over their brief exchange. According to the Mirror, lip reader Nicola Hickling decoded the brief conversation between the two singers. 

Hickling interpreted Madonna’s words as: “It’s good to see you. Congratulations on your wedding,” in the video captured during the award ceremony. The clip appeared to stand out for another reason: the 68-year-old singer rubbing Swift’s belly while saying so. 

Their conversation continued as Madonna appeared to say, “Sure, it’s nice to see you.” The Material Girl crooner then added, “I’m actually intrigued,” before asking the five-word question: “How do you do it?” The two then posed for a picture to capture the moment. At the time, the Vogue singer asked Swift to “call” her so that they could “chat.”

Swift tied the knot with Travis Kelce on July 3 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The couple invited about 1,000 guests to their wedding, including some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry. 

The pop stars’ fans were elated to see them together. An X user wrote, “MY TWO FAVORITE OMG I’M CRYING,” while another penned, “Now that’s a magical moment .. !! Love them.” A third user wrote, “They united to end the evil, yes!” 

A fan also asked the two women to collab on a song soon, writing, “I love it!! Now I need them to collab.” “MADONNA AND TAYLOR SWIFT IN THE SAME FRAME?! The amount of pop royalty energy in this video is insane,” one fan wrote.

Madonna and Swift were reportedly two of the biggest stars of the night as they led with 13 and 11 nominations, respectively. The 68-year-old won seven out of her 13 nods, including the Artist of the Year accolade. On the other hand, the Love Story crooner bagged the Video of the Year award for her hit track The Fate of Ophelia. 

This was not the first time Swift received a compliment from Madonna. The Frozen singer called the Sparks Fly crooner a Princess of pop more than a decade ago. According to Billboard, she appeared on the Today Show and said, “It’s good to have princesses [of pop]. It means there’s lots of pretty dresses around.”

Madonna continued, “I like Taylor Swift. I think she writes some really catchy pop songs. I can’t get them out of my head.” When Swift learned about the incident, she responded to it on Tumblr. She wrote at the time, “Thanks, now I’m dead.” The songstress continued to gush about the same and added, “#HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO DEAL WITH THIS #BE COOL TAYLOR STOP BEING EMBARRASSING.”
