Madonna’s VMAs Return Takes a Wild Turn as ‘Zany’ Antics Raise Eyebrows
Madonna marked her return to the VMAs stage after 23 years. She ruled the headlines after the award ceremony, but not for all the good reasons. Her appearance reportedly sparked concerns among her fans and industry colleagues, as many wondered about the reason behind her “zany” appearances.
The 68-year-old was nominated for 13 awards at the 2026 VMAs. She took home seven Moon Person trophies during the evening. Besides her winning speech, she also opened the award ceremony with a playful performance. While many lauded her for being in her element, others were not pleased with her demeanor.
According to Radar Online, an insider claimed, “By the end of the night, people were asking whether Madonna had made some kind of bet with her friends to see just how zany she could make her appearance.” The source pointed out that many came out with this theory because “each time she appeared she seemed determined to top whatever she’d done previously.”
Fans have been defending the pop star for her playfulness, claiming that she would not give a boring acceptance speech. The source therefore argued, “It’s Madonna, so nobody expects a boring acceptance speech.” They further added, “But even by her standards, there were moments when people were wondering what on earth she was going to say next.”
The Material Girl singer took to the stage multiple times during the evening. When she won the Best Dance award, she admitted to being “unclear” about what the honor was for. She soon instructed Charli XCX and Troye Sivan to stand close to her, explaining that there was “safety in numbers.”
Madonna did not stop there and made the audience laugh a bit more. She removed her leather jacket, saying that she needed to pull “this thing out of my a–.” The singer claimed it had “been there all night” before asking the audience whether they understood her joke.
In another incident, Madonna accepted the Best Collaboration award with Sabrina Carpenter for Bring Your Love. On stage, she told the audience that she did not hear back from the Espresso crooner for five days. She eventually DM’ed Carpenter herself to know whether she wanted to sing with her.
The 27-year-old soon shared her side of the story, saying that her team responds to everyone. However, she claimed that she responds faster. Many noted that the interaction caught Carpenter off-guard, but the pair walked off the stage hand-in-hand.
Besides her performance, Madonna was also criticized based on her age. According to Billboard, Whoopi Goldberg and her The View co-hosts came in defense of the pop star against ageist criticism. “The Internet can be brutal to women as we grow older,” Goldberg noted, also referring to similar criticism directed at Jasmine Guy.
The show co-host continued to mention that the internet asks people to celebrate life and then criticize them for every reason. Alyssa Farah Griffin chimed in to share that no matter what a woman of a certain age does, she is always criticized.
Griffin drew a comparison between Madonna and Guy, saying, “So Madonna’s being criticized for being too overtly s—– and trying to look too young.” She further added that “Jasmine’s being criticized for trying to age gracefully.” The host concluded that no matter what direction a woman takes in the industry, she cannot “win” over such criticism.
