Taylor Swift’s Unreleased Teenage Song Had a Chilling Twist That Shocked Her Collaborators
Taylor Swift recently treated her fans with four new songs as part of her The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore album. The pop star is expected to either release a new album or re-release an old one. However, she also has several unreleased songs that she wrote in her teenage years. One of the songs had chilling details, narrating the story of harming oneself.
Swift wrote several songs as a teenager in Nashville. While she derives inspiration from her daily life, Swift wrote a track with a rather darker side.
According to the Daily Mail, the upcoming book Taylor Swift: The Debut Years by Emily Yahr revealed details about Swift’s many unreleased songs. Some of these never-heard-before songs did not even make it to the recording studio. However, the ballad that turned out to be the most disturbing one was Dark Blue Tennessee.
The song reportedly references a suicide note that the pop star took inspiration from her beloved Shkespear’s play Romeo and Juliet. Swift co-wrote the song with Robert Ellis Orrall, her longtime mentor, in Nashville.
The book revealed that even Orrall found the track’s story to be chilling. He claimed that it included “one of the most chilling vocals he’s ever heard.” Moreover, Dark Blue Tennessee’s “horribly tragic ending” shocked her collaborators.
Yahr described the song as the sinister version of her hit track Love Story if it did not end well. The author spoke with Orrall for the book and learned that there was another artist who wished to record Swift’s Dark Blue Tennessee. The discussions went on at Sony Music. However, Swift put her foot down to decline the offer, saying that the track was very close to her.
Swift’s fondness for the track made Orrall believe that she may record the track herself one day. An excerpt from the book revealed the track’s lyrics. It reads, “She almost called him on the night that he wrote, “She almost called him on the night that he wrote, these simple words on his goodbye note.”
Orrall revealed that the song ultimately did not make it to her debut album. However, it was one of her father’s favorites. The book revealed another track, Love The Hell Out of You, which revealed how promising her skills were.
In her latest announcement, Swift gave a sneak peek into her writing and recording process. The Opalite singer detailed how the four new tracks she released were written as an ode to the love her fans gave to her album. She penned, “About a year ago, you guys did a truly unfathomable thing. Something that completely blew my mind… You gave The Life of a Showgirl the biggest first week for an album in history.”
Swift continued to share how she then took a trip to Sweden with her two collaborators on the album. “Really, we just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in,” the singer shared. However, when they came across a studio, they wrote more songs.
“I hope you love them, because they were born out of pure gratitude for your exuberance for and celebration of the album we made,” the Cruel Summer crooner shared.
