Spice Girls fans were recently sent into a frenzy when the girl group made a cryptic announcement. Gen Xers and millennials grew up dancing to the British girl group’s music. Three decades after their debut, their songs remain popular with music fans. More than 30 years later, the band appeared to have a surprise for their die-hard fans. 

The band featured Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton, and Geri Halliwell-Horner. It all started with a newspaper ad that called for female artists to be a part of the band. When the band was finally formed in 1994, it debuted in 1996 with its track Wannabe. 

The band’s official Instagram account featured a newspaper on the stairs from its ‘Wannabe’ music video, carrying a cryptic message. It read, “R U a Spice Girls fan with the ability to sing and dance? R U a superfan, a collector, a music lover? Spice Girls are a widely successful, global, choreographed, singing/dancing all-female pop act with a record nine number ones in the UK and over 100 million global sales.” 

Besides hitting nostalgia with the clip, it also left fans wondering what the announcement due on September 10 could be. The ad further said, “Thursday 10th September at 2 o’clock BST. No sheet music required. But you will need a vinyl or CD player.” Fans immediately began speculating what the band tried to convey through the message. 

An Instagram user announced, “PANIC MODE ACTIVATED,” while another fan asked, “WHAT DOES IT MEEEAAAANNNN?!?” “If it’s a world tour, I’m selling my house to buy tix!” a third fan claimed. 

One of the fans also speculated that a dream scenario for Spice Girls fans could be a tour with all five members. “Worst scenario: New greatest hits album with 3 never-heard-before remixes. Realistic scenario: Netflix Documentary,” they added. Several others expressed their excitement over the announcement and shared that they could not wait. 

According to The Telegraph, a Spice Girls reunion to celebrate their 30th anniversary almost came on the cards. Mel C opened up about the potential reunion in May and teased a plan. She said, “We are trying to find something we all agree is fitting of the legacy we have created, but that also everyone is comfortable with.” 

The singer also said that she and her bandmates were planning something she could not disclose at the time. She simply said, “It’s very difficult for me to speak on behalf of all of the Spice Girls.” Mel C further gave fans a ray of hope, saying, “I feel very positive that there will be something great.”

Spice Girls did go on a tour in 2019 sans Beckham. The five singers often reunited on various occasions since the group fully disbanded in 2000. 

While Mel C teased a potential reunion, her former bandmate, Mel B, previously dismissed the idea. According to Hello!, the 51-year-old said, “I can tell you that it’s not happening. If it does, it’ll be a shock to me, let’s put it that way.” 

She confirmed that the 2019 reunion tour brought her back into her element. However, she argued, “You can’t be nagging everyone to go on tour if they don’t want to. I laid that to rest when I turned 50.” Besides the disheartening news for her fans, Mel B revealed that a Netflix documentary was in talks.
