Mykelti Brown says she was once one of her dad Kody Brown’s favorite kids. But now, the two “don’t talk.”

The Sister Wives alum was a guest on a recent episode of the Cults to Consciousness podcast. She opened up about how her relationship with her ex-polygamist dad has changed over the years, as well as they moment she realized she was done trying to win him over.

Mykelti is the fifth of Kody’s 18 children and his second with his ex-wife Christine Brown. When she was younger, she says she was “heavily neglected” by her father, who simply had too many kids and too many wives to give them all the attention they all needed.

Later, Mykelti and Kody’s relationship improved, largely because she got along with Kody’s fourth wife, Robyn, and he liked her husband, Tony Padron.

“We went through a couple years where I was the favorite child,” she said. But that changed, and she and her dad “don’t talk right now.”

“Like, [Robyn] and I had a great relationship,” Mykelti said. “So, I was like one of the favorites. I was top-tier. But then when I, like, started to dismantle and talk back and was questioning him and questioning Robyn and their motives, they started to slowly pull back and almost like cut me out a little bit because I started having an opinion.”

“They slowly stopped talking to me,” she added.

Kody did occasionally try to reconnect with his daughter. But she didn’t feel that his overtures were sincere.

“My dad … would love bomb,” Mykelti said. “I’d get tons of affection from him. He would show up a bunch, and then he wouldn’t talk to me or call me for, like, four months. And he wouldn’t respond when I tried.”

“So I was just kind of like, ‘I don’t need this in my life.’ I had my own problems to deal with. So I stopped answering his phone calls,” she added.

‘Sister Wives’ star had disappointing reaction of ‘heartfelt’ gift from his daughter

In the latest season of Sister Wives, Kody went on a much-hyped “apology tour.” He visited his three ex-wives and tried to make amends for some of his past behavior. Mykelti thought that meant he had changed and would be open to working on their relationship. She reached out with a handmade Christmas gift that she thought would serve as an “olive branch.”

“I sent my dad a really cool, heartfelt scrapbook that my kids and I had made,” she said. “I sent it to him and Robyn and I addressed it to all of their kids. I was actually really excited about it– handprints, photos, there’s a little voice camera. Like, I put so much love into this. It was homemade. It was homemade love.”

Unfortunately, Kody basically ignored the gift. He didn’t respond after she sent it. And when she reached out two weeks later to make sure it had arrived, he replied – two weeks later – with a tepid “thanks.”

“It finally just kind of clicked in my head,” Mykelti said. “Like, you’re selfish. You’re a narcissist. You want to be looked at as the best person. And if you’re not looked at as the best person, you don’t care. So, it’s not me you care about. It’s that I’ll talk good about you. You only want me if I can talk good about you and listen to you talk.”

“I realized I just don’t need to have a relationship,” she said. “So right now I am not in contact with him.”

“It was the final straw because I spent my whole life just trying to make him happy, trying to please him, trying to be the bridge for my family trying to keep everybody together,” she added. “But I have my own problems. I have three kids; I’ll put my life and energy into them instead.”
