‘Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing’: Jamie Was ‘Cooking’ Ahead of Frightening Med Tap
Jamie Frizzell is doing OK following a frightening incident in the June 8 episode of Discovery Channel’s Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing.
Jamie collapsed on ‘Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing’
For its third season, competition series Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing follows a group of elite survivalists who’ve been dropped in the remote Australian Outback. There they must fight against the elements – and compete against each other – in an effort to win a $100,000 grand prize.
Season 3 has already seen some surprising exits from the competition. In episode 2, seasoned Naked and Afraid vet Ky Furneaux had to leave after a wound from her recent surgery became infected. Episode 4, “All Shelter Breaks Loose,” saw more cast members struggling with serious medical issues under the sweltering Australian sun.
During the shelter-building challenge, Laura Zerra was nearly knocked out by a tree branch, while Trish Bulinsky struggled after getting poisonous sap in her eye, leaving her temporarily blind. But the worse off by far was Scottish survivalist Jamie, who was unable to cope with triple-digit temperatures, putting him at risk of heatstroke.
“My face is vibrating,” Jamie, who had collapsed, said at one point as medics gave him water.
Jamie’s condition rapidly worsened. He seemed barely coherent and struggled to retain consciousness. In an interview, his partner Trish said he was “limp” and “not making much sense.”
“His neurological status isn’t great,” a medic agreed, adding, “We’ve really got to get him cooled down.”
As Jamie’s core body temperature hit 105 degrees Fahrenheit, the medics attempted to cool him down by submerging him in a nearby creek. But he needed more intensive intervention to avoid the worst effects of heatstroke, which can include vital organ damage and death, according to the Mayo Clinic.
“This is a very serious situation,” another medic said. “This is a really dangerous place for this to happen.”
Ultimately, Jamie was medically evacuated and taken to a hospital, where his condition rapidly improved.
Jamie hints he’d return for another ‘Naked and Afraid’ challenge
Given his serious health emergency, Jamie knew the crew had no choice but to pull him from the competition. But he wasn’t pleased about it.
“I’m not happy about leaving the competition, he said. “If I wasn’t pulled out when I was, who knows what could have happened? This is by far the toughest competition in the world … Australian heat is no joke. It’s no place for a Scotsman.” (The Mayo Clinic notes that heatstroke can be caused by strenuous activity during hot weather, especially “if you’re not used to high temperatures.”)
Fortunately, Jamie recovered from his close call on Naked and Afraid. He seems to have a positive attitude about the experience.
“I was cooking!!” he wrote on Instagram in reply to a follow who expressed concern about his health.
But when another follower urged him to “NEVER” take on another such challenge, Jamie demurred..
“I can’t promise that…. [Don’t] you think I should try again?” he wrote.
“I’ll live to fight another day,” he added.
Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery Channel.
