Netflix Drops Trailer for Doc on Titan Sub Disaster: OceanGate CEO Was ‘Borderline Psychopath’
An upcoming doc from Netflix takes a deep dive into the 2023 Titan submersible disaster.
Titan: The OceanGate Disaster premieres June 11 on the streamer. A first-look trailer for the film was released May 22, and it promises a scathing look at Stockton Rush, the CEO and founder of OceanGate, the deep sea exploration company behind the doomed submersible.
Titan submersible was doomed to fail, experts say in Netflix documentary
Rush dreamed of using his company’s one-of-a-kind submersible to bring tourists to visit the wreck of the Titanic, one man says in the teaser. But that dream came with serious risks – risks that Rush apparently hand-waved away.
Rush “wanted fame,” someone explains. “To fuel his ego, fame.”
“I thought Stockton was a borderline psychopath,” an interviewee claims. “How do you manage a person like that, who owns the company?”
“Nobody spoke up,” another shares. “He would ruin somebody’s life.”
Titan: The OceanGate Disaster, which was directed by Mark Monroe, will feature whistleblower testimony, pivotal audio recordings, and footage from OceanGate’s early days. The result is “an unprecedented look at the technical challenges, moral dilemmas, and shockingly poor decisions that culminated in the catastrophic expedition,” according to Tudum.
Five people died – including Rush himself – when the Titan imploded during its descent to the Titanic wreck site in June 2023. That tragedy could have been avoided, an expert suggests.
“There was no way of knowing when Titan was going to fail,” the man says. “But it was a mathematical certainty that it would fail.”
