New Book Exposes King Charles’ Reaction to Prince Harry’s Pleas for Cash: ‘I’m Not a Bank’
A new book is exposing more royal family secrets.
The Windsor Legacy: A Royal Dynasty of Secrets, Scandal, and Survival by Robert Jobson explores the last 100 years of the British royal family. Topics covered include the scandalous abdication of Edward VIII, the volatile relationship between Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, and, of course, Prince Harry’s headline-making decision to leave the royal family with his wife, Meghan Markle.
Prince Harry ‘swore at’ his father then-Prince Charles
Harry’s decision to break with his powerful relatives shook the royal family to its core, according to Jobson’s book.
Initially, the Queen welcomed Harry’s American wife into the Firm. But as tension ratcheted up between Harry and Meghan, the rest of the family, and the press, the aging monarch got “tired of the drama,” Jobson writes, according to Page Six.
Eventually, the Queen began refusing her grandson’s calls. The calls were instead redirected to his father, the future King Charles III. But Charles didn’t have much patience with his youngest son, who “swore at him and demanded funds.”
Charles even vented to his friends about the conflict in the family. “I’m not a bank,” he allegedly said of Harry’s pleases for cash.
The King has not responded to the claims in The Windsor Legacy. But a source close to Harry said the stories about him and his family weren’t true, telling Page Six that the Duke of Sussex is “not a big fan of fiction.”
There’s ‘a warmth’ between the King and the Duke of Sussex
While Charles has apparently been frustrated with Harry at times, Jobson says he wouldn’t rule out a reconciliation between father and son in the future.
“I think there’s always been a warmth there,” he said during an appearance on Good Morning America (via YouTube) on January 6. “I mean, I think that a lot of it has been stirred up, I think, in Britain, where there’s sort of a love-hate relationship with Harry … there’s definitely warmth between him and his father.”
Charles’ desire to connect with Harry and Meghan’s two young children, Archie and Lilibet, could help them put aside their differences, Jobson added.
“The King, in his current state of health, will want to have a relationship with his grandchildren. That’s only fair,” he explained.
If Harry could get his U.K. security clearance back, that would help smooth things over between father and son, Jobson added. But the situation with his elder brother, Prince William, is more complicated.
Harry getting the security clearance back “will help, but I don’t think that will necessarily bring about a reconciliation with his brother.”
