Nick Reiner made his first appearance in a Los Angeles courtroom on Wednesday, Dec. 17, after being charged with the fatal stabbings of his parents, acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer‑producer Michele Singer Reiner. Dressed in a blue suicide‑prevention smock and shackled, he did not enter a plea. Prosecutors have filed two counts of first‑degree murder with special circumstances. These include multiple victims and the use of a knife, which could expose him to life in prison without parole or the death penalty if convicted.

According to the Law & Crime Network, Nick hadn’t appeared in court before now because he was getting medically cleared. His first court hearing didn’t last long. A CNN reporter who witnessed the scene noted that Nick appeared calm.

During the hearing, Nick only said three words: “Yes, your honor.” He said these in response to confirming that he’s waiving his right to enter a plea.

Nick’s attorney, Alan Jackson, spoke to reporters briefly following the hearing. “First of all, and most importantly, this is a devastating tragedy that has befallen the Reiner family,” the defense attorney said. “We all recognize that. Our hearts go out to the entire Reiner family. There are very, very complex and serious issues that are associated with this case. These need to be thoroughly, but very carefully, dealt with, and examined, and looked at, and analyzed….”

The next court date is Jan. 7, 2026.
