Alan Jackson, the high-profile criminal defense attorney who briefly worked as Nick Reiner’s lawyer, has finally broken his silence on what led him to withdraw from the case months ago. In a sworn declaration filed in Los Angeles court, Jackson revealed that a lack of cash flow, despite promises of payment, led him to step back. Here is what we know so far.

Alan Jackson is in favor of Nick Reiner accessing his trust fund

Jackson broke his silence in a sworn statement to the court. The statement, submitted as part of Reiner’s attempt to access his trust fund, revealed that the lawyer had been contacted within hours of the younger Reiner’s arrest on murder charges.

In the document, first obtained by TMZ, Jackson said that Rob and Michele Reiner’s other two children, Jake and Romy Reiner, were initially involved in discussions with Jackson’s team and had agreed, verbally, to act as “third-party payors.” Jake and Romy later pulled their funding of the defense, according to Jackson, and no retainer was paid. Nick Reiner has limited personal funds. With no indication that funding would come through, Jackson withdrew from the case. A public defender was later assigned.

Jackson signals he would return

Alan Jackson’s services do not come cheap. The attorney is known in the legal world for his meticulous defenses, and such a defense for a case this prominent could easily cost six figures. Nick Reiner, despite his current plight, is reportedly willing to pay the famed lawyer if he could access funding.

Jackson is very open to returning, too. In his statement, he said he was “ready, willing, and able” to rejoin the case. Whether he ends up defending the younger, largely reviled Reiner depends on the outcome of the petition Nick recently submitted. If a judge grants him access to a trust set up by Michele and Rob Reiner around the time of Nick’s birth, he could pay for the defense. As it stands, those funds cannot be accessed.

The younger Reiner is accused of killing both of his parents

Nick Reiner, 32, stands accused of stabbing his mother and father to death in their Brentwood home in December 2025. The attack came hours after Nick was observed acting erratically at a party hosted by Conan O’Brien. Rob Reiner, 78, reportedly had a loud argument with his troubled son before leaving the party early.
