Rodrigo said that as she ages, heartbreak becomes easier to handle. Her teenage heartbreak devastated her.
“I think it gets easier… I don’t know, talk to me in two years and maybe I’ll have gone through the worst heartbreak ever,” she told Dazed. “But I just feel like heartbreak will never be as bad as it was when you were 17 years old. That breakup that I went through when I was 17… oh my God, nothing will ever be that tough ever again. Hopefully!”
She was 17 when her relationship with Bassett ended. She said that she doesn’t think things will be as difficult as this in the future.
“Maybe I’m speaking very naively,” she said. “But I do feel that with every kind of rejection – whether in love or a work thing, a friend thing or whatever – I’m taking stuff less personally as I get older. As you grow and have more experiences, it starts to feel OK.”
Joshua Bassett spoke about the breakup
After Rodrigo released “Drivers License,” Bassett faced a good deal of backlash from her fans. This was difficult for him, but he told GQ that “people don’t know anything they’re talking about” with regard to the breakup. He said it was difficult to stay quiet about the breakup, but he felt it was the best thing to do.
“The reality is it’s kind of like a lost cause trying to talk about any of that stuff, and I refuse to feed into any of the bulls***, so I just don’t,” he said.
Olivia Rodrigo shared her advice for anyone going through a breakup
Rodrigo said that when going through a breakup, the best advice she has is to lean on friends.
“Gosh, it’s like the blind leading the blind! I’m not, like, Mrs Relationship. I’m not super sage and wise,” she said. “But I do think that being with your friends is best. I don’t know what I would have done when going through hard times if I didn’t have great friends.”
She thinks it’s important to try to learn and grow from every relationship.
“I also think going through a breakup can be a really awesome opportunity to redirect your life in a [way] that feels more aligned with who you are,” she said. “That’s such a beautiful part of being in a relationship. Even if it doesn’t last forever and you don’t get married, it’s so worthwhile. You never learn more about yourself through any other experience. It’s a very raw thing.”
