Character Actor, James Handy, Murdered in Los Angeles, Suspect in Custody
James Handy, a character actor who spent five decades amassing over 100 acting credits, has died at the age of 81. His death, ruled a homicide, is being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department, with a suspect already in custody. Handy’s murder is the latest in a string of troubling celebrity deaths.
James Handy Was Allegedly Murdered by the Son of His Partner
James Handy was killed on June 3, 2026, in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles. According to police reports, officers responded to a distress call around 9:30 a.m. Upon arriving on-scene, they located 81-year-old James Handy in the front yard of a private home. He was unconscious and had been stabbed in the chest. Paramedics rushed Handy to a local hospital, but he could not be saved. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The tragedy gets even more disturbing when you dig further into who placed the 911 call. The caller told a 911 dispatcher, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.” According to E! News, a 44-year-old man named Michael Gledhill was arrested in connection with the murder after he told police that he was the man they were searching for. He was booked on suspicion of one count of murder, with bail set at $2 million. Gledhill is the son of James Handy’s girlfriend. She has not been named. It is unclear how long Handy and his partner had been together.
James Handy is being remembered by friends and colleagues as a kind, gracious, and deeply talented man. He was born in New York in 1944 and earned his first acting credit in 1977. Over nearly five decades in the business, Handy earned credits in films and television series, including Jumanji, Arachnophobia, Alias, and Silk Stockings. His last acting credit came in 2022, when he appeared as a bartender in Top Gun: Maverick.
A Disturbing Pattern in Recent Months
Handy’s killing is the latest in a string of celebrity deaths in the last 12 months that have come not from natural causes, but from violence and accidents. Just weeks ago, the entertainment world was rattled by another actor’s suspected murder. Stewart McLean, a 45-year-old Canadian actor who recently appeared on Netflix’s Virgin River, was last seen at his home in Lions Bay, British Columbia, on May 15, 2026. After he was reported missing, his remains were discovered, and authorities launched a homicide investigation that remains ongoing.
In December 2025, the Los Angeles Police were called to a gruesome scene at actor and director Rob Reiner’s home. He and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, had been stabbed to death. Their son, Nick Reiner, was apprehended and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths. He has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial. On the opposite coast, character actor Peter Greene’s body was discovered inside his Manhattan apartment the same month. His death remained a mystery for a time, though police later revealed that he had died from an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The death of Anne Burrell, who died by suicide in June 2025, also hit TV and film fans hard and led to speculation and questions. While Handy’s death is the latest in a tragically growing list of unexpected celebrity deaths, fans are hoping it is the last for a while.
