Olivia Wilde Said Romance with Harry Styles Was ‘Domestic and Lovely’ Despite Intense Public Backlash

Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles began dating in 2021, after working together on the set of Don’t Worry Darling. Their relationship immediately became a point of contention, both because of the on-set power dynamics and their age gap. Wilde recently said that while she found the backlash bizarre, it didn’t get to them while they were together.

Wilde and Styles began dating after her marriage to Jason Sudeikis ended. The pair have a ten-year age gap, and she directed him in Don’t Worry Darling. As a result, their romance was highly controversial.

“It really did upset people. It was crazy,” Wilde said on Call Her Daddy. “I don’t know how much I understand it yet.”

She said people’s vitriol shocked her.

“I know that it has existed for a long time in our society, like, I understand it had very little to do with me,” she said. “It is something that we have done to women for a long time. Why is it? I don’t know. People were f***ing pissed.”

She also believed that there was a “parasocial” element to the backlash from Styles’ fan base.

Though people were mad about the relationship, Wilde said that their romance was lovely.

“[It] is a burden that is very weighty and not something I envy, and he carries it with grace,” she said. “I think that is an enormous responsibility that all those stars have to carry, and it’s f***ing impossible. I don’t know, it’s wild, because we had the loveliest relationship, like, so sweet and so beautiful and, like, really actually very domestic and kind and lovely.”

She said that they were able to look beyond the backlash and enjoy themselves. This, she believed, only made people angrier.

“I think that we existed in this little bubble and the judgment never really got into that bubble, which was a miracle [and] a real testament to us making that happen,” she said. “I think that people were mad. It’s almost like the happiness made them mad. I would go to shows and dance, and people were like, ‘Oh, b****. You slut.’ Oh, man. I don’t know. It really did upset people, though.”

The couple ultimately parted ways in 2022 after close to two years together.

Styles is now in a relationship with Zoë Kravitz. The pop star proposed to her after just eight months of dating.

“He is completely smitten,” a source told Page Six. “He would jump off a cliff for her.”

While the couple has only been dating for a short time, the news of their engagement reportedly did not surprise anyone who knows them.
