During her life, Princess Diana had countless admirers. While most people appreciated the late princess for her beauty and charity work, a few men’s feelings skewed toward the romantic. Not all of that attention was welcome, and the advances of one man, Donald Trump, reportedly left Diana so unnerved that she confided in a friend about it.

Princess Diana once suggested Donald Trump creeped her out

Princess Diana died in 1997, but details about how she felt about certain people continued to trickle out for years afterward. In 2015, former BBC presenter Selina Scott opened up about her friendship with the late princess in an article for The Sunday Times. Scott revealed that following Diana’s headline-grabbing divorce from Prince Charles, Trump, then a real estate mogul, bombarded her at Kensington Palace with countless floral arrangements.

According to Scott, Diana grew unsettled by the steady stream of gifts and turned to her for advice, telling her that Trump gave her “the creeps.” Scott wrote that it had begun to feel to Diana as if Trump was stalking her, and that he viewed the princess as the ultimate trophy wife. When Scott suggested simply throwing the flowers away, Diana reportedly laughed.

Trump has commented on Princess Diana over the years

Diana never spoke publicly about Trump, and Trump has disputed Scott’s story. He has, however, made plenty of very public comments about Diana over the years.

The two shared a table at a 1995 Manhattan dinner where Diana received a humanitarian award, and Trump reportedly offered her a free membership to Mar-a-Lago, which she declined. In his 1997 book, The Art of the Comeback, Trump wrote that his only regret with women was never having the chance to court Lady Diana Spencer, describing her as a genuine princess and a dream lady.

His comments on The Howard Stern Show were far cruder. In an interview just weeks after Diana’s death in 1997, Stern asked whether Trump could have slept with her, and Trump said he thought he could have. In 2000, Trump returned to the subject on Stern’s show, calling Diana a great beauty before adding, “she was crazy, but these are minor details.” Asked whether he would have slept with her, he said he would have, without hesitation.

By the time he was running for president, Trump’s story had shifted. In a 2016 interview with Piers Morgan, Trump denied pursuing Diana romantically, saying he had met her only once and that she was lovely. He also pushed back on reports that he had been calling her.

Trump’s alleged pursuit of Diana hasn’t cooled his relationship with her ex-husband, now King Charles. Trump first crossed paths with Charles in 2005 and has referred to him as a “friend” multiple times since.
