Why Prince William Is Finding It so Difficult to Move on and Overlook Prince Harry’s Comments About Princess Kate
There’s been so much chatter about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s return to the U.K., as royal fans have more questions than answers. One thing many have been wondering about is if the Duke of Sussex and Prince William will be able to reconcile. But no one should hold their breath.
While Prince Harry has said he wants to reconcile with his family and reportedly began repairing his relationship with his father, King Charles, his brother is a harder sell.
Many assume the reason for that is because of what Harry said about William in the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, as well as other interviews he did while living in California, and what the duke wrote about his sibling in Spare. But it’s been reported that it’s not what Harry said about the Prince of Wales, it’s what Harry said about the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) that William can’t easily shake.
You may recall in Harry’s memoir that he detailed fights with William, alleging that one even turned physical. And in the Netflix series, the younger prince accused his sibling of sending him nasty text messages. But Harry’s attacks weren’t limited to just William.
In Spare, Harry wrote about tensions between his wife and his sister-in-law, claiming that he found Meghan “sobbing” on the floor after a disagreement with Kate over Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress. Harry also said that the Princess of Wales got very upset when the duchess said she had “baby brain” shortly after Kate gave birth to Prince Louis in 2018.
The duke even took what many viewed as a shot at Kate in the Sussexes’ Netflix series when he talked about royal men marrying women who “fit the mold” rather than following their hearts.
According to royal author Robert Jobson, the Prince of Wales could handle criticism aimed at him, but drew a firm line when his wife was dragged into it.
Jobson told Hello! that William forgiving Harry now that’s he’s back in the U.K. isn’t likely, opining, “I don’t think that went down too well. I think [William] could take a lot of things being said about him, but he wasn’t prepared to have things said about her when she’s not in a position to answer back.”
He added that he believes the Waleses are “going to rise above all this. I don’t think they’re going to be involved in a tit-for-tat. I don’t think that, because Harry and Meghan are here making a bit of noise, that’s going to necessarily make them do anything. I think that they’ll probably think, well, we’ve been down this road before; It creates a circus, and we’re not going to get involved.”
Royal expert Phil Dampier agreed that William will not forgive and forget, telling the Daily Mail, “William will never forgive Harry, in my opinion, not just for leaving the royal family, but for the dirt he dished out in his book Spare, the Netflix show, and the Oprah Winfrey interview.”
