When it was announced that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were moving back to the U.K. six and a half years after stepping down as working royals, many wondered what King Charles, Prince William, and the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) thought of the news.

Neither Buckingham Palace nor Kensington Palace has commented publicly on the news. However, sources said that the king is looking forward to spending more time with the Sussexes. As for how William and Kate feel, that’s likely a different story.

The Waleses and Sussexes have been estranged for years. Their last public appearance together was in 2022 during a walkabout following Queen Elizabeth II’s death, and it’s believed they haven’t spoken since. But as Prince Harry shared in his memoir Spare, the strain between the brothers was there long before Harry and Meghan left the royal family.

In the biography William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story by Russell Myers, the royal editor for The Mirror discusses Harry and Meghan’s behavior both before and after Megxit and Kate’s reaction to it.

“Catherine has always favored reason over conflict. It was how she had been brought up, in a household that resolved differences with dialogue rather than by bearing grudges,” Myers wrote per Daily Star. “At first she had thought William and Harry’s squabbles were rooted in immaturity or stubbornness, on both sides, but Harry and Meghan’s attitude towards palace staff, who she and William cared about, set the couples on an entirely different course.”

Royal sources Myers spoke to about this revealed that things came to a head after Harry and Meghan’s wedding, claiming, “They definitely thought the Sussexes’ behavior stemmed from something more than being difficult. The whole atmosphere between them was pretty toxic. Meghan was being bullish; Kate found her abrasive.

“There was definitely a hope from her side [Catherine’s] that William could try and talk to Harry and settle things, but that didn’t exactly happen … and at the end of the day, she had three young children, who were her focus and if anything she saw the inevitability of the parting of ways, although perhaps not to the extent of what eventually happened.”

Now, with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex back in the U.K., it’s anyone’s guess as to whether the former Fab Four will be able to reunite and reconcile.

According to royal author Phil Dampier, Prince William only has one focus at the moment, and will not be concerning himself with Meghan and Harry, telling the Daily Mail, “Friends tell me that, as far as he is concerned, Harry is the past, and he is only concerned about the future for his wife Catherine and their children George, Charlotte and Louis.”
