There’s been chatter for years about what the relationship between the reigning queen and the future queen is really like.

Some reports have claimed that Queen Camilla and the Princess of Wales’ (formerly known as Kate Middleton) personalities have clashed, while others say that King Charles’ wife gets jealous over Prince William’s wife’s popularity. Now, an insider is insisting that the latter is true and that’s causing tension behind the scenes.

According to Heat World, Queen Camilla struggles with all the attention her stepdaughter-in-law receives whenever they appear together at state banquets, royal engagements, or other high-profile events.

The source claimed that the queen was particularly unhappy following a recent state banquet in which the princess was praised by numerous outlets for her flowing yellow evening gown paired with the recognizable Lover’s Knot Tiara. Meanwhile, Camilla’s deep blue dress and choice to wear one of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite diadems (Girls of Britain and Ireland Tiara) became a footnote.

“She absolutely hates being outshone by Kate,” an insider told the National Examiner. “But it happens anytime they appear together because Kate is more popular, simple as that.”

Meanwhile, Heat‘s insider claimed, “Seeing her get all the attention at the state banquet really set her off.”

Heat‘s source added that Camilla is also worried about the Prince of Wales’ influence and popularity as well and fears that William and Kate could actually sideline her, saying, “She insists they’re power hungry and looking to push her out. She’s convinced that Kate has purposely left her out of meetings to stop her from having a say in things.

“The fact is, Camilla knows that eventually William and Kate will be king and queen; seeing them taking on more responsibility is a constant reminder that things are changing, and she’s terrified of what that could mean for her own position.”

Of course, the Palace is not going to comment on any tensions between the working royals, so most people are taking this with a grain of salt.

This type of gossip about issues between Kate and her stepmother-in-law is nothing new since there’s curiosity about how well they really do get along, given all the different sources who have always believed that Camilla didn’t want William to marry Kate because she was a “commoner.”

As royal author Christopher Andersen previously explained, “[Camilla’s] an aristocrat, she has always been moving in royal circles. She had always thought of herself as the heiress to Alice Keppel, her great-grandmother, who was the mistress of Edward VII … She did not look at Kate as someone who was worthy of joining the royal family. Kate is the first working-class woman to be accepted into the royal family. She is descended from coal miners, and her mother was a flight attendant.”

However, other royal commentators, including Tom Quinn and Angela Levin, have opined that “Camilla gets on very, very well with Catherine and helped her to understand the way you needed to be in the Palace because it’s very difficult.” And, “It’s true to say that Camilla warmed to Catherine and recognized her solid virtues.”
