Speculation is swirling around the tragic murder of actor-director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County District Attorney charged the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of his parents. The Reiners’ bodies were found on December 14 in their home in Brentwood; their son was arrested in LA’s Exposition Park neighborhood later that night. He is currently being held without bail and will be arraigned as soon as he is medically cleared. 

As more details emerge about the events leading up to the Reiners’ death, LA District Attorney Nathan Hochman warned people to be wary of “rumors” and “hearsay” surrounding the tragedy. 

“What I’m asking everyone to do is to rely on trusted sources,” Hochman said during the December 16 press conference. “If it doesn’t come from the district attorney’s office, from LAPD, from the coroner’s office, or from the courtroom itself, then there is a good chance you are hearing misinformation. Because at the appropriate time, the actual evidence involved in this case will be presented in a court of law.”

“Again, please do not rely on rank speculation, rumor, or hearsay to believe that you understand anything about what went on in this case,” he added.

Celebrities mourn Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner 

The killings of the Reiners have rocked Hollywood, with many celebrities, including Jane Fonda, Jerry Seinfeld, James Woods, and Kevin Bacon, publicly mourning the couple. Nick Reiner had been open about his struggles with substance abuse and addiction, and a family friend told the Los Angeles Times that his mother had become increasingly concerned about her son’s mental health in recent weeks. 

Others sources have told the press that the night before the Reiners were found dead, Rob and his son got into an argument at a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien. Nick is also said to have had a tense exchange with comedian Bill Hader before leaving the event. 

The Reiners’ daughter Romy Reiner reportedly discovered her parents dead, with multiple outlets saying they had been stabbed. (Hochman did confirm that a knife was used in the crime.) A source told TMZ that the couple may have been dead for hours. The outlet also reported that the Nick checked into a hotel in Santa Monica in the early morning hours of December 14, and that the staff later found the shower full of blood.
