Kate Middleton wore blue again in Liverpool. But this time, one similarity to Princess Diana is hard to ignore. Just two days after Prince George started Eton College, Middleton joined Prince William at Everton FC’s Hill Dickinson Stadium on September 10. 

There, she wore her cornflower-blue Edeline Lee trouser suit. She first wore it this year during her visit to Reggio Emilia, Italy, on May 13 and 14. The suit has a slim-cut jacket and high-waisted, flared trousers. In Liverpool, however, Middleton added a chunky chain necklace. 

The Edeline Lee suit also marked an important trip for the Princess of Wales. Her Reggio Emilia visit was also her first international trip since her 2024 cancer diagnosis and treatment. Middleton confirmed in January 2025 that her cancer was in remission during a visit to the Royal Marsden Hospital in London. 

Now, there’s the Eton connection, too. Middleton’s son, Prince George, started at the school on September 8, following his father’s footsteps. Notably, William began at Eton in September 1995. Diana was there for William’s first day. She wore a blue jacket over a black dress as she arrived with William, Prince Charles, and Prince Harry. 

Middleton’s outfit wasn’t an exact copy. She wore a modern trouser suit, while Diana had chosen a jacket and dress. The timing, however, is worth noting. George had just started at Eton, and Middleton stepped out in blue two days later. 

Blue has become a familiar choice for Middleton in recent years. At Wimbledon this summer, she wore a periwinkle Gabriela Hearst suit with tailored trousers. In June, she chose a powder-blue Catherine Walker coat dress for Trooping the Colour. In February, she wore a royal-blue Alexander McQueen coat to an England rugby match. 

She also wore the coat in December 2025 while welcoming Germany’s President for a state visit. Last summer, Middleton chose a slim-fitting blue Alexander McQueen suit for her visit to the new V&A East Storehouse. She had already worn the McQueen suit during an earlier visit to Evelina London Children’s Hospital. 

Blue was also one of Diana’s recurring colors. Her cobalt-blue Cojana suit in 1981 and her navy Catherine Walker dress in 1997 are two examples. Separately, there was more to her Liverpool appearance than fashion. Middleton and William attended the launch of On Your Side. It was a suicide-prevention toolkit for people in sport on World Suicide Prevention Day. 

According to The Herald, William made a direct call for action at the event. The Prince of Wales said, “Prevention works when responsibility is shared. When people have the confidence to act and when organizations provide the tools, knowledge and culture that make those actions possible.”

He added, “Giving people the confidence to step forward, giving organizations a practical way to make a difference, and bringing the sporting community together behind a shared purpose.” Gary Speed’s mother, Carol Speed, was also there. The former Wales manager and Everton player died by suicide in 2011 at the age of 42. 

William and Middleton sat with Carol on a memorial bench dedicated to the former footballer. William asked Carol if Gary had been a “breakthrough” moment in getting people to talk about suicide and mental health. Carol agreed with that.
