Prince William’s Risky Marriage Decision With Kate Middleton Was ‘Completely at Odds’ With Royal Rules
Prince William reportedly married Kate Middleton without a prenup. According to RadarOnline, he didn’t want their marriage to become “a financial negotiation.” The insider said that “sitting down with lawyers to establish what would happen if they separated” would have gone against the commitment he wanted to make.
The idea was “completely at odds” with what he wanted. The source also said William saw the “bitterness” surrounding his parents’ separation and its “devastating effect.” That reportedly left a lasting mark on his views about marriage.
King Charles III and Princess Diana announced their separation in December 1992. Their divorce became final on August 28, 1996, ending their 15-year marriage. “Whirlwind romance” wasn’t what William had with Middleton. He already knew how she handled the pressure of royal life before they got engaged.
Middleton also knew that being part of the royal family would mean “enormous personal sacrifices.” The source added that William wanted an “equal partnership” with Middleton. He didn’t want money or legal arrangements getting in the way of their relationship.

Since getting married, William and Middleton have raised three kids and taken on more royal duties. They’ve also been through some tough times together. The source stated that Middleton’s cancer diagnosis was an especially “difficult period” for the family.
William’s priority then was being there for his wife and protecting their children. Her cancer diagnosis was incredibly difficult for William, too. In a media interview in Cape Town, South Africa, in November 2024, he described the year as “probably the hardest year in my life.”
He added, “So, trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult.” William was also dealing with Charles’ cancer diagnosis at the time. From a personal family perspective, he called the year “brutal.”
The Prince of Wales also wanted their kids to grow up with a “sense of stability that he had not enjoyed.” William and Middleton now have three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. The pair had known each other for years before they married. They first met at the University of St Andrews in Scotland in 2001. They were both students there and graduated in 2005.
The two reportedly moved into a student house with friends in September 2002. At the time, Middleton was dating another student, Rupert Finch. By March 2004, photos of William and Middleton skiing together in Klosters, Switzerland, had drawn attention to their relationship.
Later, the two announced their engagement on November 16, 2010. He had proposed to her during a private trip to Kenya the month before. During their engagement interview with ITV’s Tom Bradby, Middleton called William “a true romantic.”
Meanwhile, on October 8, Middleton met Melinda French Gates in London. William had a separate day of engagements at Windsor Castle. He discussed his Homewards program, met Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle, and joined the Earthshot Prize Council judging by video call.
