The plot thickens in the September 5 episode of The Rainmaker

The new USA Network legal drama (which is based on John Grisham’s best-sellling novel) follows rookie lawyer Rudy Baylor (Milo Callaghan) as he investigates the suspicious death of his client’s son at a local hospital. But the more he digs, the more it becomes clear that he’s not looking at the typical corporate cover-up, but rather a potential murder – one that the hospital seems desperate to sweep under the rug. Now, in Episode 4, Rudy gets his hands on evidence that could help him prove a conspiracy while also coming face-to-face with the suspected killer.

Roberta’s autopsy report reveals a sinister truth

Rudy’s investigation into Donny Rae’s death while he was a patient at North City General Hospital soon had him zeroing in on one main suspect: nurse Melvin Pritchard (Dan Fogler). Last week, he and paralegal Deck (P.J. Byrne) tracked down the man who shared a room with Donny Rae. He confirmed that he saw Melvin injecting something into the other man’s neck, while whispering, “It’s OK, I’m a nurse.” (Creepy.)

Rudy suspects that this isn’t the first time that Melvin has turned angel of death. He and the team also dig into the death of Roberta Karakas, the woman we saw Melvin kill back in episode 1. She was the neighbor of Jackie, Melvin’s fellow nurse and former co-worker. Now, they have proof that Roberta didn’t die of natural causes.

In this exclusive clip, Deck pays off a doctor, handing over a fat envelope of cash in exchange for Roberta’s autopsy report. The results are unambiguous. She died of acute heart failure caused by a morphine overdose.

Deck calls Rudy, who is stepping into an elevator at the courthouse. Just as the doors slide closed, Melvin slips into the car. The two men eye each other as Deck passes on his message. Their connection isn’t great, but there’s no mistaking what he says.

“I got the autopsy for Roberta Karakas, Jackie’s neighbor,” he says. “Morphine overdose. It was injected into her neck.”

“You’re breaking up,” Rudy says, as he continues to look at Melvin.

Is this enough information to link Melvin to Roberta’s death? And how far will a white shoe firm like Tinley Britt and senior partner Leo Drummond (John Slattery) go to keep their client, North City General, out of legal hot water?
