Rumor About Why Meghan Markle Didn’t Attend the Met Gala Ripped Apart by Commentator
Another year of “fashion’s biggest night” brought out some of the biggest celebrities showing off their best looks and designer attire. The 2025 Met Gala brought speculation just like past years of who was going to attend and what they would wear.
One person who some thought could make their Met Gala debut this year was Meghan Markle. However, the actor-turned-duchess did not attend the and now there’s a claim that she turned down an invite. But not everyone is buying that, including one commentator who laid out reasons why the Sussexes were most likely never even invited.
Commentator blasts report claiming Meghan was invited to the Met Gala but chose not to go
On an episode of Andrew Gold & Kinsey Schofield LIVE, Schofield who is a royal commentator and host of the To Di For Daily podcast, took issue with an article published in the Daily Mail titled: “I know why Meghan decided to skip the grotesque Met Gala… and this is why she was right.”
Schofield challenged that claim by laying out the reasons Meghan and Prince Harry would have never been invited to walk the carpet at the 2025 Met Gala.
Scholfield shared that it’s her understanding the duchess was not invited at all. She then explained, “And why would you invite [them] … I don’t understand why you would invite a woman who’s selling fruit spread and teaching people on Netflix how to freeze ice cubes with water and flower sprinkles. I think any types of rumors that [Meghan] was invited, those are types of rumors she would start herself … Let’s dismiss this storyline. What clickbait … I don’t think this was ever an option for them.”
Scholfield also pointed out that the Sussexes would have had to meet with designers six months to a year in advance to create outfits for them that night, so they couldn’t just cancel at the last minute.
The commentator concluded with thoughts about whether Meghan and Harry will ever be invited to the Gala, saying: “Maybe one day they will be if they improve their reputation. But their reputation has been so toxic. That I again, don’t know why Anna Wintour would see value in their presence there.
“Anna Wintour just doesn’t need that kind of attention … And you’ve got such a huge guestlist … Nicole Kidman is an A-lister, Demi Moore is an A-lister … she has so many legitimate stars walking that carpet that she doesn’t need the gimmicks. Harry and Meghan have become a gimmick … they weren’t invited is my final verdict. Stop saying they were.”
Royals who have attended the Met Gala in the past
Several fans backed up Schofield’s point about Anna Wintour having a very good relationship with King Charles and the rest of the U.K.’s royal family, and therefore would not even think to invite the Duke and Duchess of Sussex based on that fact alone.
One fan opined: “Anna Wintour for all of her faults, is a true monarchist. She loves King Charles and would never invite the grifters — she could have easily put Meghan on the cover of U.S. Vogue and has not. There was no invite for Megs — zero chance.”
There have been quite a few royals who attended the Met Gala over the years including Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece in 2001, and Princess Elisabeth von Thurn und Taxis of Germany and Queen Rania of Jordan, who both attended the event more than once. Prince Harry’s cousin, Princess Beatrice, also attended in 2018 for “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination” and donned a striking Grecian-inspired purple gown designed by Alberta Ferretti.
And who can forget that Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, attended the affair in 1996? The late princess wore a John Galliano-designed Dior slip dress in navy with black lace detailing on the straps and neckline and a stunning sapphire and pearl choker.
