Rihanna and A$AP Rocky have quickly become one of music’s favorite couples, and fans can’t get enough of the sweet photos of their family. The couple has three children: RZA Athelston Mayers, born in 2022, Riot Rose Mayers, born in 2023, and Rocki Irish Mayers, born in 2025. Recently, RZA of Wu-Tang Clan fame said he feels “honored” that Rocky and Rihanna chose to name their eldest son after him. Here’s what he said.

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky welcomed their eldest child, RZA Athelston Mayers, on May 13, 2022. According to People, the couple named RZA after the Wu-Tang Clan leader, RZA. Rocky seemed to confirm this in a now-deleted Instagram post.

“‘WU TANG IZ 4 DA CHUREN’ HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY TO MY 1st BORN . RZA,” he captioned the post in May 2023.

Wu-Tang Clan leader RZA, whose real name is Robert Fitzgerald Diggs, spoke in the past about feeling “honored” to have the child named after him. And he reiterated this during an April 2026 interview with Jason Lee on The Jason Lee Show via BET.

“I took that as an honor, you know what I mean?” RZA said. “I took that as an honor — honor of respect and blessing. A$AP, I’ve watched that young man just become who he is. [I] met him when he was younger. And he actually said something to me that I was very impressed by, because he was like, ‘Yo, I want to be the next you.’ … He said it right in my eyes. And I was like, yo, rock the world. And he did it.”

RZA added that “it’s not just a name — it’s a title.” And he went into more explanation about the letter R and what it could mean for Rihanna and Rocky’s son.

“I won’t get too deep into it, but the letter R is the 18th letter in the alphabet,” he continued. “And in our mathematics, it says the R is for Ruler or Rule, right? So, we know what the rule means. It means you can rule the world, right? You know what a ruler is. He’s one who does rule the world.”

“But then those words have another meaning,” RZA explained. “It also means ruler means to measure. We use a ruler to measure things before we do it. And then a rule is a law. So, we measure law. We measure circumstances … before we act upon it. And if you do that first — and I pray that this young man as he grows, that that hits him like that, like he’s able to measure things, and he’s able to understand not just the laws of the land, but the laws of the universe….”

During the episode, Lee called Rocky to speak to RZA over the phone.

“I’m named after one of the greatest rappers, MCs,” Rocky said. “Well, my son, he named after one of the greatest producers of all time and artists. So, we had to just carry on tradition.”
