Scott Patterson Gives Brutally Honest Explantation for His ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ Exit: ‘Creative Differences Were Becoming Untenable’
Sullivan’s Crossing is coming back to The CW, minus series star Scott Patterson.
The Gilmore Girls alum played Sully for three seasons on the popular romantic drama, which also stars Morgan Kohan and Chad Michael Murray. But fans got an inkling that he wouldn’t be returning when he wasn’t featured in either the trailer or photos for the upcoming fourth season, which premieres April 20.
‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ showrunner confirms Sully won’t appear in season 4
Recently showrunner Roma Roth confirmed in a statement to Us Weekly that Sully wouldn’t appear in season 4, explaining that the show picks up immediately after the season 3 finale, which saw Sully leaving for Ireland with his new girlfriend (Kate Vernon). At the time, it was implied that the move was temporary, with most viewers assuming Sully would eventually make his way back home to rural Nova Scotia.
“While he isn’t physically present in this season, the character remains an important part of the world with the potential to be included in future seasons should that align with the ongoing creative,” Roth added.
After Roth’s comments, Patterson took to Instagram to shed more light on his departure from Sullivan’s Crossing.
“Every actor knows what it’s like to fall in love with a character and a story. I fell in love with Sully and have nothing but fondness for him,” he wrote in a lengthy post. “The creative differences were becoming untenable and I just sadly realized that the show was not something that I could agree to continue.”
Scott Patterson says ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ fans ‘deserve to know the truth’
Patterson went on to say that he felt compelled to speak out to clarify that his exit wasn’t the result of a creative decision on the part of the producers and showrunners.
“It’s unfortunate that it is now being implied that they moved on from me/Sully when the fact is the complete opposite, and those who sadly already have spoken out are also fully aware of this fact, and yet chose to say otherwise,” he wrote, adding that “the fans of the books and the show deserve to know the truth.”
“I really enjoyed Sully and fought for his voice and his character. The richness and depth of Sully, whom the fans of the books all know and love, is so multi-layered and interesting,” he continued. “The fans deserved better than to think the embodiment of this character, me, would just disrespect not only the show, but them. In the end, we’re all fans of these characters and stories, and I’ll always support and defend the truth.”
In season 4 of Sullivan’s Crossing, Maggie’s (Kohan) life at the Crossing is finally taking shape having decided on a new direction for her career and a renewed commitment to Cal (Murray). But Maggie’s life is upended when her ex-husband, Liam (Marcus Rosner), arrives with a shocking revelation. His news causes Cal to question whether Maggie will ever truly be able to leave her past behind.
Sullivan’s Crossing Season 4 premieres Monday, April 20 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
