In the aftermath of the hip-hop mogul’s federal trial, Sean “Diddy” Combs faces a dramatically altered legacy. On July 2, 2025, a Manhattan jury reached a split verdict. They acquitted him of the most serious charges — racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking — but convicted him on two counts of transporting individuals for prostitution. The mixed ruling spared him from potential life imprisonment. However, it still carries a substantial prison sentence as he remains in federal custody pending his sentencing. Recently, one of Combs’ family members spoke out regarding how the mogul could use the trial “for good.”

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ brother-in-law thinks the mogul has a chance to turn around his life

Following the mixed verdict, Sean “Diddy” Combs appeared visibly shaken in the courtroom as the jury’s decision was read. Though he avoided the most severe charges — racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking — he still faced convictions on two federal counts of transporting individuals across state lines for illegal sexual activity. Combs reportedly remained silent as the judge denied his attorney’s request for home confinement pending sentencing, remanding him to federal custody.

Despite the conviction, Combs’ legal team sees this as a victory. And Comb’s brother-in-law believes the mogul can use this experience to enact real change.

“Diddy has the opportunity now to flip things around,” Combs’ sister’s husband told DailyMail.com. “He’s a drug addict and sex addict, and he can now help other people. He doesn’t need to go back to the fame and all that. He got a brand new chance now to use everything for good.”

The family member noted that while Combs “can’t read music or play an instrument,” he still has an “ear” that makes him a music “genius.”

“The family is relieved; that’s all I can say,” the brother-in-law alleged. “I don’t know what they’re gonna give him, but it’s all good.”

Sean “Diddy” Combs was able to avoid the most serious charges against him. However, he still will likely face jail time. Law&Crime correspondent Elizabeth Millner spoke to Jesse Weber about Combs’ and his family’s reaction when the judge decided he would remain behind bars before sentencing. Judge Arun Subramanian denied bail due to Combs’ “longstanding pattern of coercive behavior and potential flight risk.”

“So, I did see kind of a little disappointment from both Sean Combs and his family after the judge made his decision,” Millner said. ” … [The judge] said bail is denied because the government correctly noted that detention is mandatory, and it’s not appropriate for Sean Combs to be released on bail given the charges that he’s still been convicted of.”

The mogul told his family he was ‘coming home’ after the verdict was read

After Sean “Diddy” Combs was acquitted of the most serious charges in his trial, he turned to his family. According to TMZ, Combs told his family he was “coming home.” However, his sentencing has not yet been determined.

Combs will stand before Judge Arun Subramanian on Oct. 3, 2025, for his sentencing hearing following July’s mixed verdict. Convicted on two counts of transporting individuals for illegal sexual purposes, Combs faces a sentencing range that could span from approximately 21 months to over five years behind bars. Prosecutors urge a 51–63‑month term, and the defense pushes for a shorter sentence in the 21–27‑month range.
