Seeking Sister Wife viewers don’t tend to be very divided about the Merrifield family. Reactions on fan sites and social media are often ones of concern and outrage at Garrick Merrifield’s influence over his first wife, Dannielle, who often expresses feelings of distress about their choice to pursue plural marriage. Given how season 5 of Seeking Sister Wife is unfolding, fans were even more shocked to see TLC’s announcement that the Merrifield family has grown.

Season 5 of Seeking Sister Wife features Lorrana’s move to Buena Vista, Colorado, to join the Merrifield family. Dannielle continues to struggle with her role in the family as the now-divorced mother of three supports Garrick’s legal marriage to Lorrana to keep her in the U.S. Things rarely go to plan for the Merrifields, so TLC’s recent announcement stunned fans.

The TV network posted a video to Instagram, showing Lorrana, Garrick, and Danielle sitting on a couch, with both women dressed in bright red dresses. The threesome smiles as Garrick states, “We have some really big news: a new addition to the family… baby Sarah!” Then, their adorable daughter is passed to them from offscreen.

Garrick holds baby Sarah, who’s wearing light blue overalls, a white long-sleeve shirt, white sneakers, and a red flower headband. The little girl smiles at the camera as Dannielle says, “Baby Sarah is such a blessing to the family. She is very similar to Lorranna, I can already tell. She has the gift of laughter and brings joy to the family.”

Lorrana explains, “She sleeps really well, thank goodness. And she loves the family. Whoever she sees, she gets super happy. And thank god, she’s growing healthy every day.”

Garrick continues, “I think we’re all feeling very happy, very thankful for baby Sarah. A little tired. Pregnancy and the journey of that has its ups and downs emotionally, you know, physically, everything. We’re all excited as a family. The family is growing with babies and looking forward to more wives, more babies. Lorranna, another baby.”

Lorrana laughs quietly and looks at the camera. Then, Dannielle says, “Thank you so much to everybody out there watching our journey on TLC’s Seeking Sister Wife. We’re so grateful. God bless you all.” Garrick and Lorrana both say, “Obrigada,” which means “thanks” in Portuguese.

The Merrifields’ baby announcement surprises us for a few reasons. First, this means Lorrana is still living in the U.S., having successfully integrated into the Merrifield family’s life in Buena Vista. Many viewers doubted that she’d get past the culture shock of a small Colorado town with a vastly different climate and lifestyle than Brazil.

Second, the announcement shocked us because it’s such a major spoiler regarding the future of Seeking Sister Wife. Although we don’t know baby Sarah’s age, we can assume that a lot has happened since the Merrifields filmed season 5. In this video, Lorrana still speaks Portuguese and avoids communicating in English. One person commented on the post, writing, “I see Danielle doesn’t have her ring on and Lorrana still hasn’t learned English.” Some jumped to Lorrana’s defense, stating how hard it is to learn English. Others believe Garrick and Dannielle should be working much harder to learn Portuguese.

Dannielle seems happy in the video — holding baby Sarah at one point and leaning in toward her husband and sister wife — a stark contrast from much of her time on season 5. When Garrick says they’re looking forward to more babies and wives, we don’t see her reaction. But Lorrana looks a bit uncomfortable.
