Selena Gomez’s mother, Mandy Teefey, recently made a vague post about her relationship with her daughters. Though she later said that she was making a joke, Teefey’s relationship with her eldest daughter has had its ups and downs over the years. Here’s a look at their complicated dynamic.

Selena Gomez’s mom just made a puzzling post about her daughters

Teefey recently made a post on Instagram that included a picture of Gomez with her younger sister, Gracie, and a solo shot of the actor. In the caption, she appeared to address her relationship with her daughters.

“My greatest accomplishments, love me or not,” she wrote. “They are the coolest. I one day they will see what  a bad a** I am and love me back as much as I love them. I’m just mom. Who never gives up when they throw me in the trash. I tell ya mom you’re doing it wrong,  maybe so, we will see. But no matter what I got your back.”

A commenter said that if Teefey was having problems with her children, she shouldn’t be posting about it on social media. Teefey responded to say that she had been joking.

“Girl. It’s typically moms not cool joke,” she wrote. “Calm down. Lol.”

The next day, she shared a picture with her daughters on her Instagram Stories, captioned, “Awe… family love.”

Selena Gomez has a complicated relationship with her mom

While Teefey said that people should not take her post seriously, she has a complicated relationship with Gomez. The actor admitted that this started from an early age because she blamed her mother for her parents’ divorce.

They faced further issues when Teefey publicly disapproved of Gomez’s decision to act in Woody Allen’s 2018 film A Rainy Day in New York. She also disapproved of her relationship with Justin Bieber, which led to them being unable to discuss the romance.

By late 2018, the mother and daughter were no longer on speaking terms. Teefey found out that Gomez was seeking mental health treatment through TMZ.

“They called me and wanted to know what my daughter was doing in the hospital with a nervous breakdown. She didn’t want anything to do with me. I was scared she was going to die,” she said in Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me. “You hang on as tight as you can and try to help them with their treatment and that’s the hardest thing to do — to then go to bed and hope that they wake up the next day. … It’s a miracle she got out, but there’s always a fear it’s going to happen again and that hurt us so much.”

In the documentary, Gomez admitted to lashing out at her mother during her low points. It appears that they are now on better terms.

She has a close relationship with her sister

Gomez is 20 years older than her sister, Gracie, but they have a close relationship.
