‘Sister Wives’ Cast Reacts to Kody and Robyn Brown’s Exit
For the last 16 years, TLC viewers have followed the Brown family navigating their polygamist lifestyle and, eventually, the fallout from the end of their plural marriages on Sister Wives. While the series will be returning for its 21st season in October, it’s going to look much different. Kody Brown and Robyn Brown have opted out of filming. A trailer for the upcoming season dropped the bombshell, and the remaining cast members’ reactions mimic what fans are thinking.
Kody Brown and Robyn Brown will not return for ‘Sister Wives’ season 21
Sister Wives fans were expecting a new trailer for season 21 any day when TLC dropped it. What they did not expect was a significant change to the show’s entire premise. The trailer opened with news that Kody Brown and Robyn Brown had opted not to return to the show. A black screen with white writing simply revealed they had left the show before cutting to footage of Janelle Brown, Meri Brown, and Christine Brown discussing the shift.
Kody and Robyn never appeared in the trailer and have not issued a statement regarding the decision. While Christine, Janelle, and Meri all maintain active social media profiles, even during the show’s hiatuses, Kody and Robyn do not. The last time Kody posted to Instagram was in 2025, while appearing on Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test. He has scrubbed any mention of Sister Wives from his profile. Robyn abandoned her Instagram profile in 2019.
The remaining cast reacts to the departure
While Kody Brown and Robyn Brown have opted out of filming season 21 of Sister Wives, it appears they will still have a lasting impact on the season. The trailer, released by TLC on September 14, mostly focused on that decision and what the remaining cast members think about it.
Christine Brown, who left the marriage back in November 2021, says she doesn’t fully know what to make of the news. She admits she has no idea what it actually means going forward. Christine’s response was surprisingly measured and unemotional. Christine has been the ex-wife who has been most outspoken about her feelings and distaste for Kody and Robyn.
Janelle Brown, whose split from Kody became official in December 2022, describes being genuinely stunned. She says she was flabbergasted when she got the news. While Janelle has worked hard to put physical and emotional distance between herself and Kody Brown, including a move to South Carolina, the news appeared jarring to her.
Meri Brown, Kody’s first wife and the last of his three plural wives to announce her split, seemed as unaffected by the departure as Christine. Still, she admitted she was surprised to learn Kody and Robyn weren’t coming back to the show at all.
None of the former ladies in Kody Brown’s life seem particularly bothered by the news; they had little interest in filming with him. Still, it does change the dynamic of the show and what fans can expect moving forward.
What the exit means for the show going forward
While Sister Wives fans have largely despised Kody and Robyn Brown, the news does throw a serious twist into the series. At its core, Sister Wives was about the uncommon and sometimes complicated relationships inside a polygamous marriage. Kody, for better or worse, was at the center of that dynamic. With Kody and Robyn stepping away, Season 21 shifts its full focus to Christine, Janelle, and Meri’s separate lives. Is that enough to support the series, though?
According to the season’s framing, the three women continue navigating their individual paths, while still reckoning with a past that keeps them connected, however loosely. Fans can expect season 21 to show Christine settling further into married life with David Woolley, Janelle building out her post-Kody chapter on a farm across the country, and Meri looking for new experiences and adventures.
