Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is set for a July premiere on HBO Max. As the premiere moves closer, HBO is letting some fun facts about the upcoming series slip. We’ve known for months that character Stuart Bloom and his girlfriend will be the central characters of the series, but we just learned that a beloved special guest from The Big Bang Theory is set to appear. While we don’t know a ton about the way Wil Wheaton will be incorporated into the series, we do know it’s going to happen, thanks to a recently released promo.

Wil Wheaton will appear in ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’

Wil Wheaton fans are very excited this week. The famed actor surfaced in an HBO Max promo reel for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. Wheaton was spotted around the 30-second mark and made his appearance inside Stuart’s comic book store, seemingly firing an energy blast at Stuart, Denise, Bert, and Kripke.

There is little to go on aside from the quick glimpse of Wheaton, but it looks like he might actually serve as a foil to Stuart and his group of allies. The concept of a villainous Wil Wheaton is not new to The Big Bang Theory fans. It actually follows his storyline from the original series quite nicely.

Wil Wheaton appeared in 17 episodes of The Big Bang Theory across seasons 3 through 12, playing a heightened, “delightfully evil” version of himself. Wheaton, once Sheldon’s childhood hero, played a recurring foil for the persnickety physicist.

Wheaton isn’t the only familiar face that fans will get to see, based on the promo. Fellow Big Bang alum Joshua Malina also appeared in the trailer. Malina had a recurring role as President Siebert in the original hit.

The Show’s Development, Premiere Date, and the Big Bang Theory Universe

HBO Max officially ordered Stuart Fails to Save the Universe on July 9, 2025. The series is produced by Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. The show is created, written, and executive-produced by Chuck Lorre and fellow Big Bang Theory co-creator Bill Prady. A mix of science fiction, comedy, and fantasy, the upcoming spinoff marks a bold creative departure for the franchise.

The 10-episode first season premieres July 23, 2026, on HBO Max, with new episodes dropping weekly every Thursday at 9 pm. It will be the fourth series in the Big Bang Theory universe, but the first to be set after the events of the original show. Young Sheldon, which followed Sheldon Cooper as a child, was the first spinoff, set in the 1980s. Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage is the second. It picks up where Young Sheldon left off. The series focuses on Sheldon’s older brother, Georgie, and his first wife, Mandy McAllister.
