Sydney Sweeney marked her 28th birthday in true Hollywood style — with a space-themed party inspired by her upcoming role in the remake of the 1968 cult classic Barbarella. The actress shared photos from the out-of-this-world celebration on Instagram, captioned, “welcome to planet syd.”

Sweeney gave fans a look at her anything-but-understated birthday celebration on Instagram. Rapper Sexyy Red performed as the actress twerked alongside her. Sweeney celebrated with her Anyone But You crew, including costar Glen Powell, producer Kaylee McGregor, and Glen’s sister, Leslie Powell, who wrote music for the film. Sweeney’s makeup artist, Melissa Hernandez, hairstylist, Glen Oropeza, and stylist, Molly Dickson attended.

Partygoers embraced the intergalactic vibe in NASA gear and alien costumes, with even a life-sized Wookiee making an appearance. Other guests included rapper Wiz Khalifa, DJ and producer Diplo, and Lauren Sánchez Bezos all dressed to match the cosmic theme. Sweeney notably attended Sánchez and Jeff Bezos’ wedding in Venice, Italy, in June 2025.

Sweeney herself channeled pop royalty, wearing a chain mail corset mini famously worn by Britney Spears during her Circus album shoot in 2008. The Euphoria star officially turned 28 on September 12. Her fascination with space ties neatly into her next big project: headlining a remake of the 1968 cult classic Barbarella. The original Jane Fonda film followed a 41st-century astronaut on a mission to defeat villainous scientist Durand Durand.

While some movie buffs are buzzing with excitement, Fonda first had mixed feelings about the reboot, pitching her own feminist take on the campy story. When the reboot was first announced, some fans were uncertain. One wrote on Reddit, “I really, really hope they don’t fuck this up. I adore the original. Just please make it fun, over-the-top, and sexy. It doesn’t even have to make sense, just make it fun.”

Sweeney, who also serves as executive producer on the project, gave an update earlier this year in an interview with Collider: “I was just in London and had a meeting to discuss the story and the script. I can’t say too much, but it’s really going to come together in a very, very fun and big way. It’s a long process… but it’s gonna be worth the wait.”

How will Sweeney’s future projects perform given her 2025 controversies?

We can’t help but wonder if Sweeney’s recent run-ins with cancel culture will hurt the forthcoming film. In July 2025, American Eagle launched a campaign starring Sweeney with the tagline “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” The campaign sparked criticism from social media users who accused it of having underlying eugenic or racially insensitive connotations, especially given Sweeney’s look.

The Immaculate star’s past actions have also surfaced in 2025. For example, there was a viral claim that Sweeney said she voted for Trump in the 2024 election. This has been debunked. Additionally, fans criticized the registered Republican’s participation in a birthday party for her mom, where guests wore MAGA‐style hats. Sweeney addressed this, saying people were reading into things beyond their intent.
