Taylor Swift has one of the most dedicated fan groups of any artist. Every time she releases new music, people pore over her lyrics and promotional material to look for hidden messages from her. In a recent interview, Swift said she finds it weird that her fans do this.

Taylor Swift said she finds it weird when her fans look for Easter eggs in her work

Swift’s fans are intensely dedicated to her. She said that there’s little she can do about their level of devotion.

“There’s corners of my fanbase who are gonna take things to a really extreme place,” she told The New York Times, adding, “There’s nothing I can do about that. There’s people who are gonna try to, like, do detective work, figure out the details — who is that about? What is this?”

She noted that she finds it frustrating when people try to speculate about the inspiration behind a song.

“When it gets a little bit weird for me is when people act like it’s a paternity test,” she said. “Like, ‘This song’s about that person.’ Because I’m like, ‘That dude didn’t write the song, I did.’ But that’s part of it.”

Taylor Swift once discussed leaving messages for her fans

While Swift said she finds some of the “detective work” weird, she has discussed putting clues into her music. This is something she has done since the beginning of her career.

“It’s sort of a tradition that we started a very long time ago,” she said on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. “I think the first time that I started dropping sort of cryptic clues in my music what when I was — I was 14 and 15 putting together my first album.”

Swift said that she got this idea from The Beatles.

“They used to play around with secret messages in their records,” she said. “I figured you can’t play a CD backward, but with encoding stuff into the lyrics, I was able to get a similar kind of thing across.”

She revealed the earliest type of code she included for the audience.

“So in my lyrics, you know, for my first several albums, I would have all lowercase lyrics except for capital letter, capital letter, capital letter, everyone once and a while,” she said. “And if they circled the capital letter and wrote them down it spelled out a secret code, a secret passage.”

She spoke about writing songs about her romantic relationships

Swift said that love is her biggest inspiration when she writes music. She pulls from her real experiences in the songwriting process.

“I’m fascinated by love rather than the principle of ‘Oh, does this guy like me?’” she told Rolling Stone, adding, “I love love. I love studying it and watching it. I love thinking about how we treat each other, and the crazy way that one person can feel one thing and another can feel totally different.”

She said that she is more likely to write a song about someone than actually act on romantic feelings.

“It just doesn’t take much for me to be inspired to write a song about a person, but I’m much more likely to write that song than do anything about it. You know, self-preservation.”
