Many people listen to Taylor Swift in order to go to sleep

A study of Spotify bedtime playlists by digital entertainment platform BC Game found that Swift was the most common artist on sleep playlists. Her songs appear over 500 times, and one stands out as the most popular.

“Taylor Swift is the most popular artist people put on when it’s time to sleep,” the study found. “Her songs appear 536 times across Spotify sleep playlists, more than any other artist in the study. The most popular choice is ‘cardigan,’ a quiet, slow-moving track from her Folklore album. Overall, Swift has 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and her catalog is full of soft, low-tempo songs that are perfect for bedtime.”

Billie Eilish comes in second, with her songs appearing over 200 times on playlists. People most frequently listen to her song “TV.” The band Cigarettes After Sex has many slow, mellow songs, so it makes sense that they place third. At bedtime, people primarily turn to the song “Cry.”

Other popular artists on nighttime playlists include Lana Del Rey, Mitski, Conan Gray, Phoebe Bridgers, TV Girl, Radiohead, and Clairo.

Artists like Taylor Swift make sense on sleep playlists, according to experts

Many people make sleep playlists out of desperation. Millions of Americans say they do not get enough sleep.

“Over 100 million Americans say they do not get enough sleep, and Gen Z is struggling more than any other generation,” the CEO of BC Games shared. “Over 1 in 4 people aged 18 to 24 experience insomnia every night, the highest rate of any age group in the country.”

As Gen Z has a particularly hard time falling asleep, it comes as no surprise that many of these artists are their favorites.

“It is probably not a coincidence that the artists dominating these sleep playlists are also the artists Gen Z grew up with and listens to most. Putting on a familiar voice at bedtime is a way to calm an overstimulated brain down, and for this generation, that voice is almost always coming from one of these artists.”
