‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ Season 5 Will Make 1 Huge Change to ‘Resurrection Walk’ Story for Netflix
[Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4.]
The Lincoln Lawyer Season 5 is coming to Netflix.
Even before the fourth season of the popular legal drama dropped on February 5, the streamer confirmed that another season was in the works. But fans who are familiar with the books on which the show is based will have to prepare themselves for a big change from the source material.
‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ and ‘Bosch’ connection, explained
The Lincoln Lawyer, which stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as maverick attorney Mickey Haller, is inspired by a series of books by Michael Connelly. Connelly is also the author of the Harry Bosch novels, which inspired Prime Video’s Bosch. In the books, Haller and Bosch share an important connection, but it’s a link that’s not present in The Lincoln Lawyer.
The most recent season of The Lincoln Lawyer ended with Mickey, who was on trial for killing Sam Scales, clearing his name. After reuniting with his ex-wife and their daughter, he takes his signature Lincoln Continental for a drive. While stopping for groceries, he noticed a woman (Cobie Smulders) looking at him. Just as she’s about to introduce herself, shots ring out. It turns out the Armenian mob is still after him. After the dust settles, Mickey asks the woman who she is. But he’s not prepared for her answer.
“Actually, I’m your sister,” she replies.
Why Harry Bosch can’t appear in ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’
Talk about a cliffhanger! The dramatic ending serves as a setup for season 5, which will be based on Connelly’s book Resurrection Walk. Readers of that novel know that it involves Mickey teaming up with his half-brother Harry Bosch, now retired from the LAPD, to investigate the case of a woman wrongfully convicted of murder. (Mickey and Harry share the same father.)
Unfortunately, Harry Bosch won’t be making an appearance in The Lincoln Lawyer. Amazon owns the rights to the Bosch stories, which it turned into Bosch and the followup series Bosch: Legacy. The character (played by Titus Welliver) also appears in the spinoff Ballard. That means that he can’t hop over to a rival streamer. Now, it seems that the The Lincoln Lawyer’s writers are working around that constraint by giving Mickey a half-sister instead of a half-brother.
The Lincoln Lawyer showrunner Ted Humphrey previously teased how the series might work around the constraints of not being able to include Bosch in their show.
“We are certainly allowed to create new characters, and we can certainly expand the world,” he told TV Fanatic (via Collider). “If we have an interesting idea for how to expand the world of Mickey’s family, we can look at how to do that.”
The Lincoln Lawyer Seasons 1-4 is streaming on Netflix.
