Actor Bobby J. Brown has died at age 63.

The Wire cast member died after being caught in a barn fire in Maryland on Tuesday, February 24. The blaze began when he entered the structure to jump-start a vehicle, TMZ reports. Some time later he called a family member for a fire extinguisher. But by the time the relative arrived at the barn, it was already engulfed in flames. His wife suffered severe burns trying to save her husband.

Brown played a Baltimore police officer named Bobby Brown in 12 episodes of HBO’s The Wire. He also appeared in Homicide: Life on the Streets, The Corner, and We Own This City. All were produced by David Simon. His other credits include roles in episodes of Law & Order: SVU and Veep. He also directed two documentaries, Off the Chain (2005), about American pit bull terriers and Tear the Roof Off: The Untold Story of Parliament Funkadelic (2016). Before turning to acting, Brown was a boxer, winning five Golden Glove championships, according to The Hollywood Reporter

Brown’s family is “still trying to process” his tragic death, his daughter Reina told People. “It’s been difficult for all of us.”

“My dad was an amazing human being,” she added. “He was super awesome. He was a pillar in the community, and he’s going to be missed by a lot of people.”
