Why is Tory Lanez in prison?

Tory Lanez is serving a decade behind bars for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot. The incident happened in 2020. He didn’t stand trial until 2022. In the end, he was convicted on three felony gun charges.

While Lanez has maintained he is innocent, Megan Thee Stallion testified that the incident occurred after she and Lanez began arguing while attending a gathering at Kylie Jenner’s home. She stated that Lanez shouted at her to “dance” before shooting at her feet as she exited a vehicle.

While Megan initially denied being romantically involved with Lanez following the shooting, she later admitted in court to having had a sexual relationship with the Canadian record producer. Lanez also admitted to being sexually involved with the “Whenever” singer, but neither suggested it was a serious, committed relationship. Lanez is currently hospitalized after the brutal attack left him with 14 stab wounds. The attack took place inside the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, California. Lanez was transferred to the state-run supermax prison in September 2023, more than a month after he was sentenced to 10 years behind bars. While the Tahachapi facility is not California’s most well-known prison, it has housed notable inmates over the years. According to inmate records, David Wayne DePape, the man convicted of attacking Paul Pelosi inside his home in San Francisco, is housed at the facility.

Before his sentencing, Lanez was held at the Los Angeles County Jail. It is unclear why the rapper was placed at the supermax facility two hours northeast of Los Angeles. Lanez previously lived in Toronto, New York City, and Miami. He is eligible for parole in 2029.
